Discover Bhopal: Lakes, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Bhopal
Nature and water, museums, and architectural and religious history give Bhopal its distinctive character. When planning your stay, you can prioritize these themes according to what interests you most: wildlife, exhibitions, historic sites or the city’s lakes.
Nature, Wildlife and Lakes
Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal developed from a degraded forest area and was designated a national park in 1981 under the Wildlife Protection Act. Its animal areas differ considerably: predators such as tigers, lions, panthers, bears and hyenas are kept in large enclosures, while herbivores such as chital and blackbuck are allowed to roam freely. A reptile section features cobras, Russell’s vipers and pythons. Cycling on designated paths is also among the park’s activities; check the current conditions in advance if you are planning a bike ride.
Bhojtal, also known as Upper Lake and Bada Talab, offers opportunities for boat rides. In March 2011, Upper Lake was renamed Bhojtaal in honor of Raja Bhoj. Boat rides may be seasonal, so it is advisable to check their availability before visiting. Lower Lake has a different historical distinction: Nawab Chhote Khan created it in 1794. Manuabhan Tekri in Sun City, Lalghati, offers panoramic views of Upper Lake and Bhopal’s old town. The lakes therefore offer different points of interest, from their names and origins to a scenic viewpoint.
Museums and Cultural Perspectives
The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum presents the state’s seven major tribes—Gond, Bhil, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol and Bhariya—with life-size models of tribal houses and depictions of rituals and festivals. The museum also includes Chinhari, a shop selling crafts made by tribal communities, and an amphitheater for cultural performances. The Regional Museum of Natural History, by contrast, focuses on nature and environmental education: its collection includes preserved specimens, skeletal structures, life-size animal models and fossils; interactive galleries, activity rooms and resource centers complement the exhibits.
The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya offers further thematic perspectives through its open-air exhibitions. These include Tribal Habitat, Coastal Village, Desert Village, Himalayan Village, Rock Art Heritage and Traditional Technology Park. The range extends from habitats and traditions to rock art and technology. If you are interested in cultural displays, the museums differ mainly in their respective themes and forms of presentation.
Architectural History and City Life
Bhopal’s mosques and palaces can also be distinguished by their history and architecture. Taj-ul-Masjid is described as the largest mosque in India and one of the largest mosques in the world; its capacity is given as 175,000 worshippers. Jama Masjid was built in 1837 during the rule of Qudsiya Begum. Gohar Mahal combines Hindu and Mughal architecture. Qudisiya Begum, also known as Gohar Begum and a ruler of Bhopal, had it built in 1821. Moti Masjid, meanwhile, was commissioned in the late 19th century by the Mughal empress Sikander Jahan Begum; its stones are shaped like flowers.
Bhopal Haat is another point of interest for contemporary crafts and cultural events: artisans present handlooms and handicrafts there during events and festivals. Check specific event dates in advance rather than assuming that the general description represents a fixed calendar.
Culinary Specialties and Getting Around
Local flavors include Sulemani Chai and Bhopali Paan. Sulemani Chai is served sweet and salty, with plenty of cream; Bhopali Paan is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. These culinary specialties add another distinct aspect to a stay in Bhopal alongside its nature and culture.
If you are planning a visit to Van Vihar National Park, the distance figures provide a rough guide for your journey: the park is listed as 12 km from Raja Bhoj Airport and 5 km from Bhopal Railway Station. Both figures are approximate and depend on the route.
