At an altitude of 1,100 meters in the Maikal mountain ranges, Dindori combines striking landscapes with a long natural and cultural history. Fossil plants, a protected temple and the traditions of the Baiga and Gond give the region its varied character. You can also plan your journey using specific road, bus and airport connections.

Maikal Landscape and Waterfalls

The Narmada River flows through Dindori district. The landscape also includes the portion of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve within Dindori: wheat fields lie alongside the hills of the Maikal range in the Satpura. The district also has evergreen sal forests. These landscape features offer a different perspective on Dindori from its historic sites and fossils.

Two waterfall destinations lie at different distances from Dindori. Devnala is about 18 km away; there, water cascades from a height of 50 feet into a deep cave between the hills. Devnala Waterfall is in Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh. Dagona is on the Budner River between the villages of Goura and Kanhari, about 85 km from Dindori.

Fossils and Wildlife

The National Fossil Park, Ghughwa, covers 75 acres. Its fossils represent plants that existed in India 40 to 150 million years ago. Fossilized tree trunks have been identified as gymnosperms, monocotyledonous angiosperms and palms. The park thus combines a specific area with a broad time span and a range of plant groups.

Another nature destination is Karopani. Rare blackbucks and chital can be observed at Karopani Natural Deer Park. Karopani is considered an example of people and wildlife living together. Those interested in wildlife watching will find a different focus here than at the Fossil Park: there, traces of plant life from the distant past take center stage; in Karopani, it is the animal species mentioned above and their coexistence with people.

Chada is designated as a rural tourism destination in Dindori district.

Temples, Painting and Crafts

The Kukarramath Temple, also known as Rinmukteshwar Temple, is a significant historic site in Dindori district and is designated a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The two names refer to the same temple. This means the site can be identified both by its name Kukarramath and by the name Rinmukteshwar.

In Patangarh, a village in Dindori district, Gond paintings are passed down from generation to generation. The works depict tribal culture and cultural heritage. Among the Baiga and Gond communities in the district, folk dances are divided into social and religious forms. The named religious dances include Sua, Dashera, Doha and Sumran.

Crafts also contribute to the region’s character: extracting iron from ore and making wrought-iron products remain widespread in Dindori district. Bamboo products made by members of Indigenous communities in Dindori are used for interior decoration in many five-star hotels and in homes.

Kodu, Kutki and Sikiya

Local food culture is closely tied to the grains that are grown and harvested. Baiga and Gond communities grow Kodu and Kutki across much of the district on the slopes of the hills. Their grains can be eaten like rice. Sikiya is a wild millet harvested by the Baiga in Dindori district. They use Sikiya to make rice and kheer. Kodu and Kutki, on the one hand, and Sikiya, on the other, thus represent different regional grains and preparations.
