In Chhatarpur district, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it comprises Hindu and Jain temples. The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple within the group is adorned with a wealth of intricate sculptures. Detailed craftsmanship, symbolism and the expressive power of ancient Indian art shape its design. Those interested in architecture and sculpture will find two closely connected perspectives on the same structure: its temple form and the richness of its sculptures.

Museum and Regional Culture

The Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum is housed in an old palace in Dhubela. It has eight galleries, two of which display inscriptions, copper plates, sati pillars, lingas and inscribed sculptures from the Gupta and Kalachuri periods. The museum also displays the clothing, weapons and paintings of the Bundela kings. The collections emphasize different aspects: alongside written records and inscribed sculptures are clothing, weapons and paintings. In this way, the museum complements the perspective on the temples with other historical and artistic evidence.

Aadivart in Khajuraho was established as a cultural village of Madhya Pradesh. It displays reconstructed houses and everyday objects of the seven major tribes—Gond, Baiga, Bheel, Bharia, Korku, Kol and Saharia—as well as of all five cultural regions: Baghelkhand, Bundelkhand, Malwa, Nimar and Chambal. The displays thus encompass both the named tribal cultures and the cultural regions of the state. The Khajuraho Dance Festival presents classical Indian dance styles such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the event dates in advance.

Shrines, Springs and Cave Pools

Jatashankar is a Hindu shrine in the Bijawar tehsil of Chhatarpur district. The site served as a shrine to Shiva and is a pilgrimage destination. Its natural features include two spring-fed pools: one contains cold water, the other hot water. At Jatashankar, religious significance thus stands alongside a marked contrast in water temperatures.

Bhimkund is located near the village of Bajna. Its pool lies inside a cave, about three metres from the cave entrance. The water is described as so clear and transparent that fish swimming in it can be seen distinctly. Bhimkund is considered a natural water source and a sacred site; local tradition dates the site to the era of the Mahabharata. For travellers who want to consider natural sites in their cultural context too, the cave setting, the appearance of the water and the local tradition come together here.

Waterfall, Cuisine and Travel Planning

Raneh Fall is a natural waterfall on the Ken River in Khajuraho. You can reach it from Khajuraho by bus and then take a taxi from the town area. As travel conditions can change, check the best connection before setting out. Khajuraho Airport has the IATA code HJR and offers connections to Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Mumbai. Flight connections can also change; check which routes suit your travel dates before your trip.

Chhatarpur’s cuisine includes a range of specialities: Khurchan is a district sweet made from pure milk. Daal Baati is a traditional Chhatarpur dish and is available in most restaurants and hotels. If you would like to include regional food in your travel plans, these two dishes offer a specific starting point: a milk-based sweet and a traditional dish found on menus in many places.

When choosing where to stay, it is worth first arranging your planned visits. The temple group and Raneh Fall are located in Khajuraho; the museum is in Dhubela, Jatashankar in Bijawar tehsil and Bhimkund near Bajna. These locations can help you weigh your priorities against the respective journeys. If you plan to visit several places, check connections in advance and base your search for a place to stay on your itinerary.
