Shivpuri can be explored through several distinct themes: historic buildings, temples, landscapes and regional cuisine. George Castle and the Chhatris offer insight into the region’s architectural history, while lakes, forest areas and a bird sanctuary provide a different perspective. During your stay, you can focus on culture, nature and local food.

Buildings and Memorial Sites

George Castle was built in 1911 by the then Scindia ruler of Gwalior as an overnight stop for King George V of England. From there, views extend over lakes and the Kardhai forests. The building thus combines a specific historical dedication with a sweeping view of the landscape.

The Chhatris are marble memorials built by Scindia rulers in an elaborately designed Mughal garden. Their architecture combines Hindu and Islamic styles with Mughal pavilions. They offer a chance to appreciate both the garden’s design and the combination of different architectural elements.

The Madhav Vilas Palace offers a different architectural style: a pink summer palace of the Scindias with features of colonial architecture. The Madhav Vilas Palace includes marble floors, iron supports, elegant terraces and a Ganapati Mandap. Tatya Tope Memorial Park commemorates the freedom fighter Tatya Tope and contains a life-size bronze statue of him.

Survaya Garhi comprises three temples and a large auditorium. The temples are considered to be completely ruined; one still contains a Shivlingam. As the condition of the site may gradually change, check the current situation before visiting.

Temples and Festival

Siddheshwar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple near Jadhav-Sagar Lake on the eastern side of Shivpuri city. Banganga is also an ancient temple in Shivpuri and is known for its 52 sacred kunds. The Siddheshwar-Banganga Festival is held every year in February around both temples and draws many visitors. If you would like to experience the festival, include February in your plans and check the specific event dates in advance.

Landscape and Wildlife

Karera Bird Sanctuary is home to around 245 bird species, including migratory and resident species.

Sakhya Sagar Lake borders the forests of Madhav National Park. It provides a habitat for marsh crocodiles, Indian pythons and monitor lizards.

Bhadaiya Kund is a scenic picnic spot at a natural spring whose water is rich in minerals. Together with the lake and bird sanctuary, this place shows another side of Shivpuri’s landscape: the spring is the main attraction here, while Sakhya Sagar brings together lake and forest habitats for various reptiles.

Regional Cuisine and Getting Around

Culinary traditions are also part of Shivpuri district. Various types of gujiya are made there; this Indian dessert is prepared for festivals such as Holi and Diwali. Panipuri is considered a popular street food in the district. The two dishes offer different ways to connect with local cuisine: gujiya is associated with festivals, while panipuri is a street food.

Shivpuri has its own railway station and connections to Delhi, Bhopal and Indore. Check the timetable for your route before travelling. Nearby, Narwar Fort is located on a hill, 41 km from Shivpuri.
