Umaria brings together several distinct travel interests: wildlife safaris and forest in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, the archaeological and historical significance of Bandhavgarh Fort, and Baiga culture and folk traditions in Dobha. In Chandia Khas, a small Kalika temple adds another cultural note.

Bandhavgarh: Forest and Safaris

The forest of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is characterized by moist mixed deciduous forest, with sal predominating. More than 100 butterfly species have been recorded there. Wildlife safaris are conducted in all zones of the reserve in registered Gypsys, in the morning and evening. A guide and a permit are required for trips to Bandhavgarh National Park. Check these requirements again before your trip and take the two times of day into account when planning. This offers two ways to experience nature side by side: safaris at set times and a forest landscape whose sal trees and diversity of butterflies draw attention to its habitats.

Historical and Religious Sites

Bandhavgarh Fort is of considerable archaeological and historical significance. In Chandia Khas, there is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Kalika. The two sites offer different cultural perspectives: the fort foregrounds history and archaeology, while the temple is dedicated to Kalika. Together, they complement the nature-focused themes of the tiger reserve with a historic structure and a religious point of reference. In the wider destination of Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi offers a different historical perspective: its Buddhist monuments include monolithic pillars, palaces, temples and monasteries. The intricately carved gateways tell stories from the life of Buddha and from Buddhist Jataka tales. Construction of the Sanchi Stupa began in the 3rd century BCE under the Mauryan emperor Ashoka.

Dobha: Baiga Culture, Forest Walks and Food

Baiga culture and vibrant folk traditions are present in the tourism village of Dobha. Guided forest walks and birdwatching are offered there. Culinary traditions are also part of the experience: Baiga women prepare indigenous dishes such as Kodo Roti, Mahua Ladoo and Kutki Kheer. Unlike the safaris in Bandhavgarh, Dobha brings guided forest walks, birdwatching and the dishes mentioned above together. This offers a different perspective on the region’s cultural and natural themes.

Other Nature Experiences in Madhya Pradesh

The wider destination of Madhya Pradesh also offers other nature experiences. Kanha National Park is home to around 22 mammal species, including Bengal tigers, leopards, dhole, chital, barasingha and sambar. More than 200 bird species, including migratory birds, have been recorded in Panna National Park; the Ken River also winds through the protected area. These examples have different focuses: Kanha is known for its diversity of mammals, while Panna offers birdlife and river scenery.
