Discover Dezhou: Cultural History and the Jianhe River
Accommodation in Dezhou
Dezhou’s cultural and scenic highlights include a historic tomb north of the urban area, Confucian culture, a museum with several functions, and a section of the Jianhe River in the National Wetland Park. They are joined by the historic local dish Dezhou-Baji and an experience route developed for Dezhou. When planning your stay, you can distinguish between specific places, cultural themes and a connection to the river.
History and Culinary Tradition
The Sulu Royal Tomb lies north of the urban area of Dezhou and covers approximately 20,000 square metres. It is the only complete tomb of a foreign king preserved in China, with descendants serving as tomb guardians. The tomb has stood for 606 years and is regarded as a historic testament to Chinese-Filipino friendship. Its significance thus links a specific place in Dezhou with a history that extends beyond the city.
Dezhou-Baji offers a different focus: this historic local dish was first made in 1692 and has a history of more than 300 years. The distinction is useful when considering the themes: Baji focuses on the history of a dish, while the Sulu Royal Tomb connects a tomb with Chinese-Filipino friendship.
Confucian Culture and Museum
Dongziyuan Scenic Area is located in Dezhou’s Tianqu New Area. A description dated April 15, 2025, lists it as a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction, gives its area as 743 mu, and describes Confucian culture as its main focus. A 2025 entry also names Dongzi Reading Platform as part of the scenic area.
Dezhou Museum is a comprehensive museum that brings together collections and exhibitions with scientific research and public education. Unlike the distinctly Confucian focus of Dongziyuan Scenic Area, it combines several institutional functions. A specific cultural theme and a broader museum profile thus offer different points of reference.
The Jianhe River and an Experience Route
Shandong Dezhou Jianhe National Wetland Park encompasses the section of the Jianhe River within Dezhou’s urban area. Its planning area extends from the Sinu Temple water-control hub to the northern border with Hebei and is 31.3 kilometres long in total. This measurement refers to the overall length of the planning area. Both its connection to the Jianhe River and the extent of the planning area are therefore important to understanding it.
“Dao Zhonghua · Qilu Tour · Two Rivers Hand in Hand” was developed as an experience route for Dezhou. Its themes bring together Yellow River culture, canal culture, intangible cultural heritage and red culture. It is therefore broader in scope than the explicitly Confucian focus of Dongziyuan Scenic Area: both offer different cultural perspectives on Dezhou.
