In the wider region around Qingdao, marine life and cultural history offer distinct travel interests. As you plan, it is worth considering what makes each destination distinctive: Qingdao Underwater World displays marine animals in several exhibition areas, while Zhanqiao is best understood through its historical phases of construction. A former governor’s residence and a sculpture park add perspectives on architectural and cultural history. Together, these examples offer different points of interest to inform your travel planning.

Marine Life at Qingdao Underwater World

Qingdao Underwater World comprises four underground levels and ten exhibition areas. It features more than 1,000 species and tens of thousands of marine animals. These figures refer to two different measures: the diversity of species and the number of animals. An interactive marine education area complements the exhibition and includes an underwater touch wall and a fish-feeding area.

Zhanqiao and Its Historical Phases of Construction

Zhanqiao can be understood through several phases in its construction history. In 1892, it was built as an iron-and-wood structure, about 200 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a wooden deck. A renovation followed in May 1901: Zhanqiao was converted into a cargo wharf, extended to 350 meters, and built of stone at its northern end. The two lengths therefore refer to different historical states: about 200 meters when it was first built and 350 meters after its later conversion. In September 1931, the Huilan Pavilion was added at the southern end as part of a further extension. This chronology distinguishes the original construction, its conversion into a cargo wharf, and a later structural addition.

Residence and Cultural Figures

The former residence of the German governor of Jiaozhou is located at the southern foot of Signal Hill, 26 Longshan Road, Shinan District, Qingdao. It was built between 1903 and 1907 for the German governor of Jiaozhou and is also known as “总督楼”. Its construction period and original purpose give the building a specific historical context.

Qingdao Cultural Celebrities Sculpture Park was established in 1994. It features statues of 20 deceased historical cultural figures, including Gao Fenghan and Pu Songling, who were from Qingdao or lived there. While Zhanqiao’s history can be traced through structural changes, the park focuses on historical figures. These approaches differ in subject matter and complement each other as cultural themes in the wider region.
