Weihai: Coastal Parks, Tides and History
Accommodation in Weihai
Weihai offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: Happiness Park combines a coastal setting with urban amenities, Yuehai Park focuses on tides and evolution, and Liugongdao is home to historic remains. The Weihai Museum adds a place to visit in Huancui District. The options are quite distinct: open coastal parkland, themed interpretation and military history each appeal to different interests.
Happiness Park: Coast and Urban Spaces
Happiness Park is an open coastal park in Weihaiās urban waterfront area. It brings together tourism, recreation, shopping, dining and entertainment. The park covers 20 hectares, extending from Tiyu Road in the north to Jinxian Ding in the south. To the east, it looks across the water toward Liugongdao; to the west, it borders the central business district. Both these outer boundaries and the parkās internal layout are useful for getting your bearings. From north to south, the coastal areas are named ęµ·éµ, ęµ·é , ęµ·čµ, ęµ·ę and ęµ·ēæ. These five names form a north-to-south sequence within the park. Together with the endpoints of Tiyu Road and Jinxian Ding, they provide a brief overview of its layout.
Tides and āHomecomingā at Yuehai Park
Yuehai Park offers a different focus. Its tidal plaza presents tidal phenomena associated with the sea and playfully explains the process of biological evolution. Marine phenomena and biological development are thus presented side by side as themes in the same place. At the center of Yuehai Plaza stands a lighthouse with the thematic motif of āHomecoming.ā The difference between the parks is clear: tides, evolution and homecoming shape the themes described at Yuehai Park, while Happiness Park, as an open space, combines several urban functions.
Historic Sites on Liugongdao
Liugongdao adds historical themes to the options and is located near Weihai. The island is home to remains from the First Sino-Japanese War. These include the Qing-era Admiralty Office of the Beiyang Navy, a naval school and old gun emplacements. These examples represent different forms of historical evidence: military administration, training and gun emplacements. This distinguishes the island from the parks; the historic military remains are the main focus on Liugongdao.
