Accommodation in Jining
In the wider region around Jining, you’ll encounter themes related to Li Bai and the Old Grand Canal, archaeological remains, Nanchi and Taibai Lake. These different highlights offer starting points for planning your trip around your interests.
Museums and History Along the Grand Canal
The Li Bai Memorial Museum in Jining is located on the north bank of the Old Grand Canal in the old town. Founded in 1986, it covers 6,000 square meters. Its main building, Taibai Tower, has a floor area of more than 700 square meters. The museum is classified by the state as a second-class museum and serves a cultural heritage protection function.
The permanent exhibition covers Li Bai’s life and time in Jining, his relationship with Du Fu, and the history of Taibai Tower. Li Bai’s literature and its study are also among the topics. If you’re planning a museum visit, check in advance what is currently on display. The new Jining Museum has a different focus: its five permanent exhibitions cover, among other subjects, the origins of the region, Zou-Lu culture, Confucian culture and Shuihu culture, stone inscriptions, the Grand Canal, historical sites and present-day Jining. It’s also worth checking the current exhibitions before your visit.
Archaeological Site and Li Bai Memorial Sites
In Rencheng District, the archaeological park at the site of the River Governor’s Office includes an exhibition hall, a cultural plaza, and a protection and presentation area for the archaeological site. In December 2025, the park was included in the third list of archaeological parks in Shandong Province. Its exhibition hall is divided into six sections covering the history of the highest state authority responsible for waterways during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The protection and presentation area features recreations of gates, the central courtyard road, pathways, a passage room and the main hall uncovered through archaeological excavations.
Huanbi Spring is also associated with Li Bai. The site’s name reflects the story that the poet wrote poems there and washed his brush during his extended stay in Jining. In December 2013, Huanbi Spring was designated a national cultural heritage site of special significance. The site officially opened to the public free of charge on May 18, 2022. This date describes the opening at that time; check the latest information about access and opening hours before visiting.
Another example is Nanchi, a classical landscape garden dedicated to preserving historical culture. It brings together canal, Shaoling and Wangmu folk cultures. Its twelve scenic spots include the Wangmu Pavilion, the Shaoling Shrine, the old Nanchi Gate, the stele gallery and the Qiao Yu Art Museum. These places give an impression of how different cultural traditions come together within a single garden.
Landscapes and Time-Specific Experiences
Taibai Lake Scenic Area combines sightseeing and recreation with wetland protection and water purification. Figures published in 2022 cite more than 80 fish species, over 130 bird species and more than 300 species of plankton and aquatic plants in the area. These figures refer to the reporting available at the time, not an ongoing count. If you’re particularly interested in landscapes and nature, Taibai Lake offers a different focus from museums and historical sites.
A 2021 report describes the “運河記憶” (Canal Memories) project, with a water route of around 2.1 kilometers from Dongdasi to Huitong Bridge and 15 attractions along the way. At the time, the route featured light shows and performances of Huagu, Yu Opera and Huangmei Opera. These details are from 2021 reporting; check the latest information about current visitor access and performances.
In December 2024, the Taibai Tower experience “又见太白” (Encountering Taibai Again) was described as a regularly staged performance. It combines poetry recitation, sword dance and encounters, and tells stories about Li Bai, among other subjects. As this does not confirm a current schedule, check the latest performance dates before making specific plans.
