Wanpingkou: Coast and Distinctive Structures

Wanpingkou Scenic Area in the wider Rizhao region covers more than 740,000 square meters of land and over 300,000 square meters of beach. More than 90 percent of its land area is forested, and the coastline is over 4,400 meters long. This coastal area can therefore be considered in terms of several measures: the extent of the land, the beach area, the forest coverage, and the length of the coast. Wanpingkou is also known for its clear, mild water, wide fine-sand beach, pleasant surroundings, and abundant sunshine. The Tidal Tower is a distinctive landmark at Wanpingkou Square in the wider Rizhao region. It stands about 300 meters south of Gate 1 and is 42 meters high. Its transparent tower structure is complemented on the outside by a viewing platform with a lotus-shaped metal lattice. In addition to the extensive coastal areas, the site offers a clearly defined structure whose height and design set it apart from the landscape features.

Sunshine Coast Greenway: A Long Route

In the wider Rizhao region, the approximately 28-kilometer-long Sunshine Coast Greenway runs from Dongfang Lighthouse Square to Liangcheng River Estuary National Wetland Park. Designed for cycling and walking, it is accessible along its entire length to wheelchairs and strollers. Marine and Garden Attractions at Rizhao Ocean Park

In the wider Rizhao region, Rizhao Ocean Park is opposite Gate 4 of Wanpingkou Scenic Area. Its attractions include an oceanarium and a flower and bird garden. Sunshine Oceanarium features a wide variety of marine life, with more than 1,000 species. Its exhibits include sharks, sea lions and seals, schooling fish such as sardines, whale sharks, penguins, and jellyfish; it also has a coral tunnel. The range of themes spans a variety of marine animals and a specially designed coral area. The park’s offerings also include beluga and dolphin shows.

Rizhao Ocean Park in the wider Rizhao region also includes the Four Seasons Flower-and-Bird Garden, which offers a different focus. It is home to more than 30 rare bird species, dozens of rare fish species, and over 1,000 species of flowering plants. This garden brings together birds, fish, and plants. Cultural Sites in Dongyi Town

Dongyi Town in the wider Rizhao region brings together themes of Dongyi and maritime culture with traditional northern Chinese architecture and fishermen’s courtyard complexes. The site consists of four islands: Fishermen’s Culture Island, Folk-Culture Experience Island, Foreign Culture Island, and the Leisure, Entertainment and Sightseeing Island. This layout makes the different themed areas a central feature of the site.

In the wider Rizhao region, Folk-Culture Experience Island in Dongyi Town features four themed exhibitions dedicated to Dongyi, fishing, ceramics, and wine culture. It also has Longshen Temple, Yue Lao Shrine, an academy, a wishing pavilion, and a theater. Fishermen’s Culture Island features traditional fishermen’s houses with seaweed-thatched roofs, a shopping street, and shops offering experiences related to fishermen’s families. Together, these themes and architectural features give a concrete impression of how culture, architecture, and fishing traditions come together here.

Forest Park and Sailing History

In the wider Rizhao region, Rizhao Coastal National Forest Park stretches along seven kilometers of coastline on Rizhao’s northern shore. It was established in 1992 on the site of the Dasha-Wa Forest Area as one of China’s first national forest parks. Its long coastline and history of establishment offer two distinct points of reference: the park’s landscape and its history.

In the wider Rizhao region, the Rizhao World Sailing Championship Base was built to host the 2005 World Championships in the Europe Class and the 2006 World Championships in the International 470 Class.
