When searching for hotels in the Greater Khingan Mountains destination, you can plan around regional highlights: forests and wetlands, seasonal recreational activities, and Oroqen culture and cuisine. The following destinations and themes are in the wider region around the Daxing’anling area.

Daxing’anling area: Location and climate

The Daxing’anling area lies in the northwest of Heilongjiang Province, in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, and on the northeastern slope of the Greater Khingan Mountains. It is described as China’s northern border region and as the “North Pole of China.” The climate is cold temperate and continental monsoonal; the average summer temperature is 20 °C. This average refers to the wider area and provides seasonal guidance, not a daily weather forecast.

Forests, wetlands and viewpoints

Nanwenghe Wetland, also known as Nenjiang Source Scenic Area, preserves an intact ecosystem of pristine forest and wetlands, as well as the source of the Nenjiang River. Its island-like forest wetlands are unique nationwide. Nanwenghe Wetland is also a nature reserve protecting a cold-temperate forest-wetland ecosystem. The region’s natural landscape therefore centers on both the connection between forests and water and the protection of this habitat.

In Songling District, Baiquangu Ecological Tourism Scenic Area is listed as a Class 4A tourist attraction in the official 2025 list. A 2024 description mentions wooden walkways, a lookout tower on Luquanshan, and three forest tree houses. Cold-Temperate Botanical Garden in Jiagedaqi District is also listed as a Class 4A attraction in the 2025 list. These regional nature destinations offer a range of ways to explore the area—from forests and wetlands to a botanical garden.

Seasonal recreational activities

The tourism plan of Jiagedaqi Forestry Bureau focuses on summer ecological recreation and winter sports. For the southern part of the Daxing’anling area, the tourism plan names Ying Shan Hong Ski Resort, the Ice and Snow Park, and a river cruise on the Duobuku’er as key visitor facilities. These are included in the planning framework; before traveling, check the current operating status and visitor access for any facility that is important to you.

A 2024 description also introduces Xing’an Water Park in Ganhe Wetland Park. The built attraction combines entertainment and recreation with water activities, food, and family activities. If this is a key part of your plans, check in advance what is currently on offer. Comparing the regional themes highlights the differences: the tourism plan focuses on seasonal nature recreation and winter sports, while the water park is described in terms of water activities and recreation.

Oroqen culture and regional cuisine

At Eighteen Stations Oroqen Ethnic Customs Park, visitors can experience Oroqen culture. Oroqen folk cultural traditions in the Daxing’anling area include paper cutting, traditional clothing, shamanic clothing, zhandaren, and shamanic dances. An Oroqen cultural experience area is also being developed, centered on Baiyinna Ethnic Township. Plans include sightseeing, hunting, fishing, handicrafts, ethnic performances, breeding rare animals, and traditional food and accommodation. These elements are described as plans and should not be taken as confirmation of an ongoing program.

Regional food resources in the Daxing’anling area include cold-water fish from the Heilongjiang River, blueberries, cranberries, medicinal plants, and more than 30 varieties of edible mushrooms, including 木耳, 猴头, 毛尖蘑 and 榛蘑. A 2024 description mentions more than 80 dishes developed for Yinluju Wild-Vegetable Experience Hall, mainly featuring specialty medicinal cuisine. It also lists educational activities, viewing, picking, and hands-on experiences for visitors. Before visiting, check which activities are currently available.
