Guangxi between Karst and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Guangxi
Guangxi brings together diverse landscapes and forms of cultural heritage: karst areas, river landscapes, rock art, rice terraces and an ancient canal. When planning your trip, it’s worth first identifying the themes that interest you most. This will help you focus on the sights and landscapes that best suit your stay.
Karst, Rivers and Waterfalls
The Guilin Karst component within Lijiang National Park includes tower karst and cone karst. Huanjiang, by contrast, is a cone karst area within Mulun National Nature Reserve. The two areas therefore offer different perspectives on Guangxi’s karst landscapes: Guilin’s described landscape includes two karst formations, while Huanjiang is classified as a cone karst area.
Nine Horses Fresco Hill is on the Guilin Li River, four kilometers upstream from Xingping. Yellow Cloth Reflection is in Xingping Ancient Town, along a particularly scenic stretch of the Li River; sightseeing boats traveling to Yangdi pass by the site. If you’re planning a boat trip, check the current schedule, as services may vary. The two places offer different ways to take in the river landscape: a named scenic feature on the river and a stretch that boats pass on their journey.
Another striking waterscape is the Detian Transnational Waterfall. It is located in Detian Village, Shuolong Town, in Daxin County and is connected to the neighboring Ban Gioc Waterfall in Vietnam. In China, the Detian Transnational Waterfall is rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction. The operator describes the Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Area as offering a tourism experience that combines sightseeing, cultural exchange and cross-border interaction; seasonal programs may change.
Rock Art and the History of Waterworks
The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape brings together rock art with karst, river and plateau landscapes. It includes 38 rock art sites on steep cliffs carved by the winding Zuojiang River and its tributary, the Mingjiang. The rock paintings date approximately from the 5th century BCE to the 2nd century CE and depict the life and rituals of the Luoyue. Both the landscape and the art’s long historical timeframe shape the character of this cultural heritage site.
The Lingqu Canal in Xing'an County is a 36.4-kilometer-long ancient canal connecting the Xiang River with the Li River. A canal project from the Qin period, it was completed in 214 BCE. The Lingqu is an important cultural heritage site and a multifunctional waterworks project: it serves irrigation, flood control, water supply and tourism. The canal offers a way to explore both its history and its many functions.
Chengyang Eight Villages also offers a distinct cultural experience: the site consists of eight Dong villages. In 2024, Chengyang Eight Villages was rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction and recognized as a nationally important cultural heritage site. If these designations matter for your current plans, check their current status.
Rice Terraces and Trip Planning
The Longji Rice Terraces are located in Longji Town in Longsheng County, Guangxi, and are recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. The Longji Rice Terraces are also rated a national 4A-level scenic attraction; check this designation when planning your trip. Traditional rice terrace farming is preserved at the Longsheng Longji Terraces, whose history dates back at least 2,300 years. Festivals mentioned there include the Longji Long-Hair Festival, the Plowing Festival, the Seedling-Planting Festival, the Clothes-Drying Festival and the Golden Autumn Terrace Cultural Tourism Festival. Check the dates before your trip if you’d like to attend one.
A direct tourist bus runs daily from Nanning East High-Speed Railway Station to the Detian Transnational Waterfall. Departure times depend on the station’s schedule, so check the times before traveling. When choosing where to stay, it can help to start with the focus of your trip: are you most interested in river and karst landscapes, rock art, the history of waterworks or rice terraces? Search according to that priority, then compare specific accommodation options.
