Laibin: Geology and Early History
Accommodation in Laibin
Around Laibin, geological features meet traces of early history and historical remains on an island. For planning your trip, the main themes can be clearly distinguished: Permian geology and fossils on the one hand, and a Paleolithic find and remains from the Southern Song Dynasty on the other. Not all the sites are within the city; the resort has a separate location in relation to the city.
Geology Around Laibin
The Permian Profile of 蓬莱洲 protected area is located in Xingbin District of Laibin. In the associated township, there is a path through the geological monument and a scientific exploration trail. For travelers interested in Earth’s history, the profile, monument, and exploration trail together form a geological point of interest in the Laibin area. Maintenance and access rules may change; check them before your visit.
Another site connected with geology is the 蓬莱洲(时光岛) tourism resort in Chengxiang Town, Xingbin District. It is a national 4A-rated scenic area. Visitors can explore geological features there and learn about prehistoric fossils. The resort’s visitor attractions therefore focus on both the geological landscape and fossils.
A Paleolithic Find
The “麒麟山人” site is nearby. On January 14, 1956, a fragment of a human skull base was discovered in Gaitou Cave on Mount Qilin and named “麒麟山人.” The find is dated to approximately 30,000 years ago and assigned to the Late Paleolithic. The dating gives an approximate timeframe, while the Paleolithic classification identifies the associated cultural-historical period.
The fossil is housed at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; a copy is kept at the Guangxi Museum. In February 1963, the site was designated a cultural heritage site of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The discovery site, the fossil’s location, and the museum copy can thus be distinguished: they represent different connections to the history of the find.
Island History on the Hongshui River
Historical remains from the Southern Song Dynasty are located on 蓬莱洲时光岛 in the Hongshui River. The island is also home to a “Golden Spike,” described as the world’s fourth. The 蓬莱洲(时光岛) resort thus combines a geological focus, which includes the study of fossils, with a historical dimension tied to dynastic history.
Comparing the time periods helps put the different themes into context: the “麒麟山人” is dated to approximately 30,000 years ago, while the island’s remains are attributed to the Southern Song Dynasty. The surrounding area therefore brings together evidence from very different historical periods.
Laibin as a Place to Stay
The tourism resort is 16 km from Laibin’s urban area. If you are looking for a hotel in Laibin, take the location of each site you plan to visit into account when planning your trip. The geological trails are part of the protected area; check its current maintenance and access rules before visiting.
