Discover Louga: desert, nature and culture
Accommodation in Louga
From overnight stays in the desert of Lompoul to the international FESFOP cultural festival, the Louga region reveals a range of themes. Nature, cultural events and historic sites sit alongside the question of which type of accommodation suits your trip.
Accommodation and regional overview
The 2024 edition of the regional statistics records a total of 30 tourist accommodation establishments in 2023: 14 hotels, 4 inns, 10 tourist camps and 2 furnished residences. The establishments are spread across the region’s three départements. The total therefore covers different types of accommodation across the entire region, not hotels alone.
Desert stays and nature
The Lompoul Desert offers a different kind of overnight stay. Overnight stays in Touareg tents are available there; tent-based tourist camps are considered accommodations that allow close contact with the natural surroundings. Lompoul is also associated with camel rides. If you are planning to stay at a particular camp, check its availability before your trip.
Lac de Guiers is also cited as a remarkable natural attraction in the Louga region. Alongside the desert experience in Lompoul, it adds another natural attraction to the region’s travel appeal.
Cultural events in Louga
FESFOP in Louga is an international cultural festival. Since it was founded in 1999, it has brought together countries from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas, as well as regions of Senegal, every year. Its international scope and the participation of Senegalese regions give the festival a distinctive place in the region’s cultural life. If you would like to plan your trip around an edition, check the dates for your intended travel period.
A report dated 9 May 2025 also describes Louga’s annual donkey race. It draws a large audience from across the city and takes place at Stade Djibril Diouf, formerly Stade Wattel. While FESFOP puts international and Senegalese exchange at its heart, the race is notably associated with its local audience. If you choose it as a reason for your trip, check the date for your travel dates.
Memorial site and heritage
The Case du Tirailleur in Thiowor is a memorial site honoring Senegalese Tirailleurs of all generations and backgrounds. A 2020 description presented Abdoulaye Ndiaye’s thatched house with a corrugated metal roof as a small museum. It displayed personal belongings, photographs and explanatory panels.
The Louga region’s heritage inventory lists the Ancienne Caserne de l’Artillerie in the commune of Louga, Louga railway station and the historic site of Toundou Diéwol. The Linguère département also lists the ruins of the Faidherbe military post. Thus, a site explicitly dedicated to remembrance stands alongside other named architectural and historical sites.
