Landscape and Nature in Kedougou
The Bassari landscape is characterized by terraces and rice fields, with villages and hamlets in between. In the broader context of Senegal, the Bassari Cultural Landscape encompasses the areas of Bassari–Salémata, Bedik–Bandafassi and Fula–Dindéfello. This classification gives the regional landscape name a wider geographic context.
The Dindéfelo Community Natural Reserve is in the Kédougou region. To the south, it is bounded by the headwaters of the Fouta Djallon, which form a natural border with Guinea; the region is characterized by its rugged terrain. Within the reserve, the terrain supports several types of forest and savanna. Available activities include numerous trekking opportunities, considered spectacular.
Niokolo-Koba National Park also has its own distinctive landscape: gallery forests and savannas line the Gambia River. Its wildlife includes Derby elands, chimpanzees, lions, leopards and elephants, as well as numerous birds, reptiles and amphibians. Visitors can travel along the Gambia River. The landscape and the animal groups mentioned offer nature enthusiasts several specific themes to consider when planning their trip.
Cultural Sites and History
The Great Baobab of Iwol is included on Senegal’s national heritage list. Itato is a historic site in the Kédougou region and was once a slave-trading post. The two sites represent different aspects of the region’s cultural heritage. The Fonderie de Djikoye is a traditional blacksmithing site. Ethiouwar is a traditional Bedik village and also a pilgrimage site.
In Kédougou, the Regional Museum explores local history. The Musée du Fer in Fongolimbi presents traditional crafts. Together with the historic sites and the blacksmithing site, the museums offer further ways to explore history and craftsmanship. When planning your trip, you can choose between landscape experiences, cultural sites and exploring local history.
Activities and Seasonal Events
The Falaise de Bandafassi offers climbing opportunities for people of all experience levels. Local guides accompany visitors to Dandé Cave, which is considered the source of Dindéfelo Falls. The region’s natural attractions also include the seasonal waterfalls of Afia. These destinations offer different experiences: climbing, trekking, a guided visit to the cave and seasonal waterfalls.
If you are planning your trip around an event, you can take the following times of year into account. National Fonio Day is held annually in March or April in Kédougou; the Festival Slam et Poésie is scheduled annually for May or June in Kédougou. The Journées culturelles Diallonké are held annually in November or December in Fongolimbi.
