Diourbel has a range of religious and historical highlights. In Touba are the Great Mosque, the Aïnou Rahmati well and several sites connected with Mouride history; Darou Salam has its own founding tradition and a Magal with a different focus of remembrance. Near Cekeen is the archaeological site of the Wago Fal tumulus. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between architecture and pilgrimage traditions, places of religious remembrance, and a tumulus as your focus.

Touba: Mosque, landmarks and Magal

The Great Mosque of Touba has five tall minarets: one main minaret, two on the west side and two on the east side. The main thoroughfare also helps with orientation in Touba: it runs in a straight line from the southern junction of the ring road to the mosque. Pilgrims from Dakar, Diourbel and Mbacké travel along this route; the distance is within a 2 km radius.

In the northern part of Touba, the Aïnou Rahmati well lies behind the house of Serigne Saliou Mbacké. The well is often called the “Well of Mercy” and is listed among the sites and monuments in Senegal’s national inventory. Its location and name give you two concrete reference points for placing this site in Touba.

Daaray Kamil houses a library dedicated to the Holy Book of Islam, as well as the mausoleum of Serigne Abdou Lahat Mbacké. The Magal de Touba is held every year in the holy city of Touba in the Diourbel region and commemorates Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba’s departure into exile. It was included in Senegal’s national list of intangible cultural heritage and associated with the Diourbel region. A 2025 report says that the Magal welcomes millions of believers and sympathizers of the Mouride Brotherhood.

Darou Salam: Founding and remembrance

Darou Salam is considered the first city founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba in the 1880s. The Magal of Darou Salam commemorates the meeting between Cheikh Anta Mbacké and his brother Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké (1853–1927) when the latter returned from exile in Gabon. The commemorative focus of the two Magals is therefore different: the Magal de Touba commemorates the departure into exile, while the Magal of Darou Salam commemorates the meeting and return.

The site is also home to the mausoleum of Mame Cheikh Anta Mbacké (1865–1941), also known as “Borom Gawane.” He was a faithful companion of the founder of Mouridism. Its founding history, Magal and mausoleum give Darou Salam a distinct place among the region’s religious and historical sites.

Kër Gu Mag and the Wago Fal tumulus

In the Kër Gu Mag area, the Baytûl Kitab room, also known as “La Chambre du Savoir,” preserves personal belongings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, including Quran manuscripts and Khasā’id. The examples mentioned range from Quran manuscripts to Khasā’id and complement the sites whose significance is revealed through Magals and mausoleums.

The Wago Fal tumulus, about 12 meters high, is located near Cekeen. It adds an archaeological dimension alongside the religious sites of remembrance in Touba and Darou Salam.

Choose accommodation based on your travel focus

If you are looking for a hotel in Diourbel, first decide which themes matter most for your trip. Touba combines the Great Mosque with the annual Magal; Darou Salam is known for its own founding history and a Magal commemorated for a different reason; the Wago Fal tumulus is near Cekeen.
