Kolda: Daaka, Cultural Heritage and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Kolda
The Kolda region combines a strong religious tradition with historic sites and a landscape of waterways and varied vegetation. The Daaka of Médina Gounass is a major reason to visit; other cultural reference points include historic heritage sites, the Kankurang and the international weekly market in Diaobé. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the city of Kolda and the other places in the region.
The Daaka of Médina Gounass
The Daaka is an annual ten-day spiritual retreat in the Kolda region. Thousands of worshippers come from all regions of Senegal and neighboring countries. The exact dates vary from year to year; check the dates if the Daaka determines when you travel. The religious event was founded in 1942 by the marabout Thierno Mouhamadou Saïdou Ba (1900–1980).
The event site is ten kilometers from the town of Médina Gounass. Médina Gounass is in the Vélingara Department, about 160 kilometers from the city of Kolda and 80 kilometers from Tambacounda. For planning purposes, it is helpful to treat the town of Médina Gounass and the separate event site as distinct reference points. During the spiritual retreat, men traditionally prepare meals for thousands of pilgrims.
Historic Sites and Cultural Heritage
The Tata of Moussa Molo Baldé in Ndorna is one of the historic monuments of the Kolda region. Ndorna is in the Médina Yoro Fulah Arrondissement. Also in the arrondissement, in Soulabaly, is the Tomb of Coumba Oudé (Tombe de Coumba Oudé), which is also a historic monument. Hamdallahi is a historic site in the Médina Yoro Fulah Arrondissement.
In the Kolda Department, the megalithic site Site mégalithique de Pata is also among the historic or protohistoric sites. The Arbre Moussa Molo Baldé, also known as the Caïlcédrat de Kolda, is considered an important historical and cultural symbol of the region. The Kankurang is practiced in Kolda as part of its tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The region’s cultural profile thus includes both specific historic sites and a living practice.
Rivers and Vegetation
The region’s river network includes the Casamance River and its tributaries. Natural vegetation ranges from forest to shrub savanna and includes, among other things, palm groves and mangroves. The region’s character is therefore shaped by both its waterways and varied vegetation. The region’s forestry resources include 50,000 hectares of Niokolo-Koba National Park.
Kolda is part of the Casamance area as described for tourism, which stretches from Ziguinchor through Kolda and Sédhiou to Cap Skirring. This broader regional context complements the picture of the individual places and landscapes within Kolda.
Market and Hotel Planning
The international weekly market in Diaobé is also part of the Kolda region. If you are planning your trip around the market, check local market days and conditions in advance. This will help you take this event into account alongside the Daaka and the historic sites when planning your trip.
As of May 2025, there are 23 tourist accommodation or reception facilities with a total of 337 places. Numbers and capacity may change, so check actual availability for your travel dates. When choosing a hotel location, it helps to decide on the focus of your trip first—for example, the Daaka in Médina Gounass, historic sites in the Médina Yoro Fulah Arrondissement, or the market in Diaobé.
