Sheboygan County: Beaches, Nature, and Motorsports
Accommodation in Sheboygan County
Sheboygan County offers different perspectives on Wisconsin: public sandy beaches on Lake Michigan, wetlands and inland waters, nature parks, trails, and motorsports. Deciding which of these will shape your trip is a good starting point for planning. Nature watching, outdoor activities, and culture each offer a different focus—and help you choose destinations that suit your interests.
Coastline, Dunes, and Wetlands
Sheboygan has two miles of public sandy beaches along the shores of Lake Michigan. Surfing, kitesurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding are all possible there. At South Beach near King Park, you can often see kitesurfers when wind speeds are 15 to 25 miles per hour. Kohler-Andrae State Park also focuses on the coast, with miles of golden beaches. It is open to everyone to explore and enjoy.
A different landscape awaits you at Kohler Dunes State Natural Area, where you can see active and stabilized sand dunes, interdunal ponds, and a dry-mesic white pine forest. The Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area is defined by its expansive wetland. It includes the largest restored wetland in the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior watersheds of Wisconsin’s waterways. Numerous water and wetland birds use the area to rest, nest, and raise their young. Along the coast, beaches and dunes take center stage; in the marsh, it is the birds and wetland habitat.
Experience Nature and Get Outdoors
Maywood Environmental Park spans 135 acres and includes six different ecosystems, an arboretum, and a butterfly and hummingbird garden. Hiking, walking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing are available there year-round at no charge. Its range of activities makes the park a destination that can be explored differently depending on the season and your interests.
At the Sanderling Nature Center, exhibits on local wildlife, interactive information kiosks, and hands-on activities offer different ways to connect with nature. From the observation deck, you can watch ships on Lake Michigan and waterfowl. If you prefer to stay active, Jaycee Quarry Park offers year-round opportunities for disc golf, mountain biking, and hiking; the park also has views of the Pigeon River shoreline.
Cycling and hiking options also come in different sizes: Sheboygan County has more than 39 miles of paved, car-free multi-use trails that are part of the NOMO Network. The Rocky Knoll trail system at Rocky Knoll Health Care includes 7.5 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. For water activities, the county maintains six public access points on various inland waters. From Broughton Sheboygan Marsh, navigable, shallow waters extend for 25 miles to Lake Michigan. Tours are also available on the Sheboygan River; visitors can rent stand-up paddleboards for coastal tours on Lake Michigan.
Motorsports and Other Interests
Road America in Elkhart Lake adds motorsports to nature and water experiences. The road course is four miles long and has 14 turns. The “4 Miles of Fitness” visitor program lets you cycle, walk, or run on the four-mile course with 14 turns. Other offerings include public race weekends, karting and supermoto at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex, and motorcycle and advanced driving schools.
The time of year can also influence your choice of activities. When there is enough snow, Sheboygan County maintains 228 miles of public snowmobile trails. This offers a different winter focus from cross-country skiing and walking at Maywood Environmental Park; take snow conditions into account when planning.
Culture and Local Insights
Culture and local traditions also add to the region’s character. The Downtown Sheboygan Falls Historic District includes more than 40 buildings restored to their original 19th-century splendor. Bookworm Gardens is a botanical garden in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, inspired by children’s literature. In Elkhart Lake, the Farmers & Artisans Market at Village Square is a Saturday morning tradition: about 50 vendors sell locally produced Wisconsin vegetables, flowers, cheese, crafts, and specialty products.
Next, check the location of your specific hotel in relation to the destinations you want to visit. This way, you can align your choice with your itinerary without reducing the county’s different experiences to a single focus.
