Allouez combines a strong cultural focus with a variety of parks and trails. When planning your stay, you can choose between a historical focus and different outdoor activities. This allows you to select places to visit based on your interests: Heritage Hill offers insight into regional history, while parks and trails provide different ways to experience the landscape and enjoy recreation.

Cultural History at Heritage Hill

Heritage Hill State Historical Park is a historic site in Allouez. The grounds feature 26 original and reconstructed buildings. They illustrate historical and cultural developments in northeastern Wisconsin from the 17th century to the present day. This broad time span makes the site a focal point for travelers interested in the region’s history. The park also offers experiential cultural programs about the lives of the people who shaped the history of northeastern Wisconsin. The focus is therefore not only on the buildings, but also on cultural interpretation and personal stories. You can include the park as a distinct theme in your travel plans if you want to explore Allouez primarily from a historical perspective.

Parks with Different Features

The Village of Allouez has 12 parks with a total of more than 300 acres of parkland. Their features vary considerably. East Lawn Park has a walking trail and a canoe and kayak launch. Fishing is available at Kiwanis Park, which also has a walking trail. If you are choosing between these two parks, East Lawn offers access to canoeing and kayaking, while Kiwanis also allows fishing. Both parks have a walking trail. You can therefore base your choice on the activity that matters most during your stay.

Nature-related features are also spread across several parks, each with its own focus. St. Francis Park has extensive stands of old-growth forest that attract a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles. Wiese Family Park has a nature trail and a disc golf course. Green Isle Park has nature trails and cross-country ski trails; cross-country skiing adds a seasonal winter activity to the park’s offerings. Your choice between Wiese and Green Isle therefore depends on which combination you prefer: a nature trail and disc golf at the former, or nature and cross-country ski trails at the latter.

Trails Along the Fox River and Through Allouez

The route is the defining feature of the Fox River Trail: it runs along the Fox River through the entire Village of Allouez and can be accessed in Allouez at locations including St. Francis Park. The Allouez Trail Connection is a separate trail: a paved route about half a mile long that connects the Fox River State Trail with Webster Avenue. These two trail descriptions answer different planning questions: the Fox River Trail is defined by its riverside location and route through Allouez, while the Allouez Trail Connection is defined by its approximate length and endpoints. In winter, maintenance of the Allouez Trail Connection may vary; keep this in mind if you plan to use the trail during that season.
