Brown: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Brown
In Brown County, places to visit range from geological formations and trails to museums and regional history. Natural sites, winter activities and cultural destinations each give a trip a different focus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Brown, the places you want to visit can be a helpful starting point for planning.
Landscape and Natural Sites
Fonferek's Glen features a 30-foot waterfall, dolomite cliffs and a stone arch within the Niagara Escarpment. At Wequiock Falls, a large gorge offers a close-up view of the Niagara Escarpment’s rock formations. The park is also home to the Jean Nicolet Monument and an official Wisconsin Historical Marker highlighting Red Banks.
The trails at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve begin and end at the West Shores Interpretive Center. Check current access to the center before you travel. Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary offers nearly five miles of free trails for walking, hiking and cross-country skiing; check trail access and seasonal conditions before your visit.
Trails Through Brown County
The Fox River State Recreational Trail runs for more than 20 miles from downtown Green Bay to the Brown–Calumet County line, following a former rail corridor. In Allouez, its route includes the Health Trail, an outdoor fitness course. The Brown County section of the Mountain-Bay Trail is surfaced with compacted limestone gravel. The trail runs through three counties; trail rules and permitted uses may vary by section. Check local notices and current rules before using it.
The E.J. “Ollie” Smith Reforestation Camp covers more than 1,400 acres. In winter, it offers groomed cross-country ski trails, including lighted trails, as well as trails for fat biking and snowmobiling. Check current winter trail conditions before your trip. These features help distinguish the trail offerings: the route and endpoints of the Fox River State Recreational Trail, the surface and section-specific rules of the Mountain-Bay Trail, and the designated winter activities at the camp.
Museums and Regional History
Heritage Hill State Historical Park is home to 26 original and reconstructed buildings. They represent historical and cultural developments in northeastern Wisconsin from the 17th century to the present. The National Railroad Museum is the only railroad museum in the United States designated by the U.S. Congress. At the Neville Public Museum, the Generations Gallery presents topics ranging from fossils to football, along with stories of the people of northeastern Wisconsin.
The Brown County History Trail connects visitors with more than 100 sites throughout the county. With the free digital pass, you can visit historical sites and check in at them. The Brown County Fair offers a different focus: its agricultural exhibits and demonstrations also share the history, traditions and achievements of Brown County.
Activities for Different Travel Interests
The Neil Anderson Canopy Tour at NEW Zoo & Adventure Park is a treetop course that leads from the Adventure Park to NEW Zoo, passing through trees and over animal habitats. Check tour booking and availability before your trip. Along with the museums, trails and natural sites, it offers another specific reason to plan a stay in Brown County.
