West Virginia: Waterfalls, History and Outdoor Experiences
Accommodation in West Virginia
West Virginia comprises nine travel regions, each with its own landscapes and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide what you’re most interested in: hiking, climbing and whitewater rafting are all options, as are history, culture and wellness. The examples below show different sides of the destination and offer specific ideas for your stay.
Hiking, climbing and enjoying the water
The New River Gorge has nearly 100 miles of hiking trails. Blackwater Falls State Park and Coopers Rock State Forest also offer extensive trail networks: more than 20 miles at Blackwater Falls State Park and more than 50 miles at Coopers Rock State Forest. These figures give you an initial idea of the trails available in each location. At Coopers Rock, you’ll also find overlooks above gorges, while sandstone cliffs offer opportunities for climbing and bouldering.
The New River Gorge offers even more outdoor activities. There are more than 1,600 established climbing routes, and whitewater rafting is also available in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. This gives you a choice of hiking, climbing and rafting when planning your trip, without having to focus your stay on just one activity.
One striking natural feature is Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade. Tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles gives the water an amber color. In winter, Blackwater Falls State Park also offers the Blackwater Falls Sled Run. Its 14,000-foot-long Wonder Carpet conveyor belt is a notable feature of the facility.
History and unique perspectives
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park sits at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers and covers 3,500 acres. Museums and exhibits in historic Lower Town focus on John Brown’s 1859 raid. Visitors interested in the town’s history will find a clear focus here, while the park’s location at the confluence also helps place it in its natural setting.
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers a different perspective on technology and history. The round-trip excursion train ride to Bald Knob takes 4.5 hours. The Cass Historical Museum explains how engineers repair and maintain historic Shay locomotives. This lets you combine a longer train ride with a museum visit focused on a specific aspect of railroad history.
Guided tours of the Green Bank Observatory campus can also be part of your plans; they last about an hour. Tour schedules may change, so check the current schedule before visiting. The Vandalia Gathering showcases traditional music, dance, crafts and food. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, check the event dates before booking.
Wellness and choosing what interests you
At Berkeley Springs State Park, the historic Bathhouse Spa offers massages, mineral baths and reflexology. The park’s public springs flow at a temperature of 74.3 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes spa services and a specific quality of the spring water the focus, distinguishing them from the trails, cliffs and historical exhibits in the other examples.
The time required for individual activities can also shape your daily plans: at 4.5 hours, the Cass train ride takes considerably longer than the approximately one-hour guided tour of the Green Bank Observatory campus. For a ride on the aerial tramway at Pipestem State Park, seasonal operation is the main thing to keep in mind. It carries visitors 3,600 feet down from the canyon rim to Bluestone River Gorge; check operating hours when planning your visit.
If hiking or climbing is your main interest, compare the trail and climbing options mentioned above. For history, Harpers Ferry or the railroad experience in Cass may be good starting points; for wellness, Berkeley Springs is a specific place to consider. First decide which of these interests matter most for your trip, then focus your hotel search on your chosen destination.
