Mercer County Between Gorge, Forest, and Culture
Accommodation in Mercer County
The Bluestone River has carved a gorge up to 1,000 feet deep into the landscape. At its heart is Bluestone National Scenic River, which protects a 17-kilometer stretch of river in Mercer and Summers Counties. For trip planning, this offers a varied look at trails, water, and wooded landscapes.
Gorge, River, and Outdoor Trails
Bluestone National Scenic River offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as fishing, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing. The Bluestone Turnpike Trail is a highlight: this 9.5-mile, moderately difficult hiking trail follows the route of an old riverside road. Its length, difficulty level, and historic route provide clear guidance when choosing a hike.
Camp Creek State Park and Forest also offers different ways to spend time outdoors. Nearly 6,000 acres of forest define the area. There are 27 miles of trails open to mountain bikers, as well as 15 hiking trails totaling 33 miles. This lets you compare the trail options by activity and distance, rather than treating every route as the same kind of hiking trail.
At Pipestem Resort State Park, 20 hiking trails add to the nature experiences. The aerial tram descends over the rim into Bluestone Gorge. At Pipestem Stables, you can choose rides lasting half an hour, one hour, or two hours. These three time options make it easy to picture the difference between a shorter ride and a longer outing, without requiring you to build a fixed day plan around them.
Pinnacle Rock State Park has more than six miles of hiking trails. Nearby is Jimmy Lewis Lake, which is stocked with trout seasonally; stocking times may vary. White Oak Waterfall is easily accessible via a scenic riverside trail. Trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check them before your visit.
The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System offers further connections: the Pocahontas Trailhead connects the Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek, and Warrior trails. If you are interested in the individual routes, you can use this connection as a guide when choosing the right trail section.
Local History and Culture
Cultural stops range from historic buildings to stages and exhibits. The restored Art Deco Granada Theater originally opened in 1928. The Historic Bramwell Walking Tour includes 19 stops and offers insights into the town’s families and historic homes. These are two different ways to explore history: the architecture of an entertainment venue, and a walking tour focused on homes and families.
The Chuck Mathena Center stage hosts children’s musicals, Broadway shows, symphony concerts, and more. The RiffRaff Arts Collective brings together fine art galleries and studios with a performance stage. For a creative activity of your own, Hammer & Stain Princeton offers DIY wood workshops: participants choose a project and make a finished piece. Workshop offerings and booking details may change, so be sure to check them in advance.
The Mercer County Fair takes place every year in July; the specific dates vary from year to year. If the fair fits your travel plans, check the dates for your intended visit. Mercer County is also one of the 13 counties in the National Coal Heritage Area. The Coal Heritage Trail Interpretive Center features exhibits on the history of coal mining in West Virginia.
Museums with a range of focuses offer further insights into regional history. The Mercer County War Museum spans three floors and includes artifacts, photographs, memorabilia, and stories. It honors veterans from southern West Virginia, from the Civil War to the present day. The Princeton Railroad Museum displays more than 100 historic railroad lanterns; the museum is temporarily closed. Check access before planning a visit.
Oral traditions are also part of the area’s stories: accounts of the Lake Shawnee Abandoned Amusement Park tell of a tragedy from pioneer times, an ancient burial ground, and an abandoned amusement park. These accounts should be understood as folklore, not as independently verified historical facts.
