Seneca Rocks defines the natural landscape of Pendleton County: The striking rock formation rises nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River and is a popular climbing destination. Hiking, fishing and regional history also offer different ways to shape a trip here. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering whether you’re most interested in rocks and trails, guided climbing or places such as Franklin.

Rock Landscapes and Hiking Trails

Around Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest peak, 60 miles of scenic hiking trails wind through the area. A stone-and-steel observation tower stands at the summit, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. Another hike follows the five-mile Seneca Creek Trail to Seneca Creek Falls. The waterfall is in Monongahela National Forest at the foot of Spruce Knob, also in Pendleton County. These destinations offer ways to experience the county’s varied landscapes, from summit views to waterfalls.

Big Bend Campground offers direct access to the one-mile Big Bend River Loop. The nature trail follows a loop, running mostly along a bend in the river. Its stated length gives you a clear reference point for planning; the trails around Spruce Knob, by contrast, are listed as totaling 60 miles. Biking is another option for outdoor recreation. If you’d rather spend time by the water, trout fishing is available at 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake and in the surrounding streams. The county also has fishing spots on remote bodies of water, lakes and rivers.

Seneca Rocks isn’t the only way to experience the region’s cliffs up close. NROCKS offers a professionally guided, one-mile via ferrata with fixed anchors. The tour takes 3.5 to 5 hours and covers 1,085 feet of elevation gain. The route includes a 150-foot-high, more than 200-foot-long suspension bridge, as well as exposed heights of 280 feet. These time and distance details help you plan the tour as a separate activity. NROCKS’s Canopy Tour in North Fork Valley is different: it includes seven ziplines, up to 60 feet high and extending up to 680 feet.

More Activities and Regional History

Activities at Seneca Caverns include disc golf on a scenic course that surrounds the caverns. Seneca Rocks Visitor Center has observation decks, informative exhibits and a gift shop. It also has a catch-and-release fishing area. The visitor center also presents the history of Native Americans connected with Pendleton County.

In Franklin, the Pendleton County Historical Museum, known locally as the Boggs House, is housed in the county’s oldest home. Built of logs in 1758, the building originally served as a frontier fort three miles north of Franklin. The museum displays Civil War and World War II artifacts, as well as regional folk art, quilts, and woven blankets and coverlets. The museum is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May through September; tours can be arranged by phone during other seasons.

Franklin’s historic district offers another way to explore the past: Part of it was designated a Historic District by the National Park Service in 1985 and added to the National Register of Historic Places. Other ways to get your bearings in the region include driving through rural, unincorporated communities with historic markers and recorded stories. Franklin’s annual West Virginia Trout Fest takes place the first weekend in May. Check the specific event dates before your trip.

Local Flavors

The On The Rocks Craft Beverage Trail features tastings of hard cider, whiskey and maple moonshine made with locally grown and harvested ingredients. This adds a culinary dimension to your itinerary, alongside nature and history. The range of themes can help you decide which experiences will shape your stay.
