Skykomish was founded in 1893 as a railroad town for the Great Northern Railroad. You can see this theme in the restored depot, preserved historic buildings, and a ride on the miniature railway. Parks, the Skykomish River, and the pump track offer other points of interest. The range of activities spans railroad history and the townscape to trails, cycling, and waterside activities.

Railroad History and the Townscape

Depot Park is home to the restored historic Great Northern Railway Depot, which serves as a visitor center and museum. Also in the park, you can ride the Great Northern & Cascade Railway, a miniature live-steam railway with a 7½-inch gauge. The railway has more than 2,700 feet of track. This brings a historic railroad building and a miniature railway offering rides together in one place—two different ways to experience railroad history.

The Skykomish Historical Society Museum presents the history of the town and its surroundings. Skykomish has preserved many buildings from its heyday and still looks much as it did then. The Skykomish Historic Commercial District is significant for its connection to the town’s development. The Historic Maloney Store was built in 1893 by John Maloney, the founder of Skykomish. The same year links the founding of the railroad town with the construction of the store, although these were two separate events.

Parks, Trails, and Cycling

A short, ADA-accessible trail runs along the Skykomish River in Levee Park; the park also has a place to rest. Another ADA-accessible trail, about 0.2 miles long, overlooks Maloney Creek and includes a picnic area. These differences can help you compare the trails: Levee Park offers a short riverside trail with a place to rest, while the Maloney Creek trail combines a creek overlook with a picnic area.

The Skykomish Pump Track offers cyclists a loop where they can practice balance, cornering, and bike handling. Its focus differs from that of the park trails: here, the emphasis is on cycling skills and practice on the circuit.

Activities on the Skykomish River

The Skykomish River offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife watching. River access is available near the bridge to town. These three options appeal to different interests: you can include the river in your travel plans with fishing, paddling, or wildlife watching in mind.

Events and Facilities

Skykomish Ballpark has campsites, an outdoor kitchen, restrooms, play equipment, and access to the Skykomish River. It hosts Music in the Park annually; specific dates and details may vary. If you’re planning your stay around this event, check the latest event information before your trip.

Tunnel Days is a recurring celebration in Skykomish featuring a parade, an outdoor market, a pie-related event, activities for children, live entertainment, and food. Individual program items may change. While Music in the Park takes place annually at the ballpark, Tunnel Days is a celebration with multiple program items. If an event is a deciding factor in your trip, check the current date or program details in advance.
