Albemarle amid Nature, Gardens, and History
Accommodation in Albemarle
A stay in Albemarle can be shaped by different interests when planning your trip: scenery and activity, history, museums, or regional food and drink. Places and activities range from shared-use trails to gardens, exhibitions, and cider tastings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Albemarle, these themes can help you first find the right focus for your trip.
Scenery, Trails, and Activity
Albemarle County Parks & Recreation provides more than 90 miles of maintained, publicly accessible trails. Most public trails in the county are shared-use trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. Choosing among these three activities can shape the focus of your trip planning.
Ivy Creek Natural Area & Historic River View Farm is a 219-acre natural area. Another focus for mountain bikers is the Biscuits + Gravity area, which features downhill trails, jump lines, and a mini pump track, and is designed for mountain bikers of all skill levels. The designated themes therefore vary considerably—from a natural area to a space designed specifically for downhill biking.
Shenandoah National Park runs along the western edge of Albemarle County. Camping and hiking are available there in the Blue Ridge Mountains. These scenery and recreation options add another focus for trip planning alongside the trails in the county.
Gardens and Historic Sites
Monticello’s Gardens and Grounds Tour explores restored flower gardens, the vegetable garden, and the surrounding grounds. Seasonal scheduling may vary. Monticello is also a historic site associated with architecture, landscaping, agriculture, and domestic comforts. Those interested in gardens can get a close look at several areas of the grounds on the tour; the site’s historical significance also encompasses various aspects of life and design.
James Monroe’s Highland was the occasional residence of James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president, from 1799 to 1826. Highland is a former plantation in the hills of Albemarle County. Both its period as a residence and its former status as a plantation are part of the site’s history.
Michie Tavern was an 18th-century inn originally located on Buck Mountain Road in the northern part of Albemarle County. For several decades, it has served as a museum and restaurant complex. The site’s history thus connects its former character as an inn with its later use.
History and Crafts
The Scottsville Museum traces the history of Scottsville from its 18th-century settlement on the James River to its heyday as a busy river and canal port in the 19th century. Permanent and changing exhibitions cover traffic on the James River, the Civil War, and artifacts from Indigenous communities. Other topics range from school life and theater to clothing, toys, furniture, and photographs.
Canal Basin Square features replicas of various types of batteau; interpretive panels explain their role in Scottsville’s history. This adds a concrete connection to river shipping to the museum’s account: the focus is not only on the town’s development, but also on different types of boats and their historical significance.
The Crozet Artisan Depot represents more than 80 regional artists and craftspeople at the Historic Train Depot in Downtown Crozet. Its program includes monthly art openings, workshops, and demonstrations. These regular events offer different ways to experience regional crafts—from attending an opening to taking part in a workshop or demonstration.
Cider and Other Food and Drink
Albemarle CiderWorks at Rural Ridge Orchard offers cider and apple tastings. Seasonal availability may vary. Along the Monticello Wine Trail, there are more than 40 wineries in Charlottesville and Albemarle County; the number and listings may change. This figure refers to both areas named, not to Albemarle alone.
Reservations are required for the Orchard to Bottle Cidery Tour & Tasting Experience. It can be booked on Fridays and Sundays; check the dates before your trip. This lets you account for seasonal tastings and reservation-required offerings as separate planning considerations.
