Brownfield is the county seat of Terry County and was founded in 1903 by developers W. G. Hardin and A. F. Small. Gomez is considered the county’s first inhabited place. These two local histories offer different historical perspectives, alongside museum artifacts, seasonal birdlife, water activities and local attractions. This makes it possible to discover Terry County through specific cultural and recreational interests.

Culture and History in Terry County

The Terry County Heritage Museum showcases artifacts spanning Native American culture to the region’s ranching and agricultural heritage. It is located in the house that Alfred Marion “Dick” Brownfield had built in 1928. Terry County’s First Jail is also on the museum grounds: on E. Cardwell St., on the south side between S. B and S. Club streets. Built in 1916, the jail is a one-story, one-room building with two steel cells. It was moved to the museum site and restored there in 1975.

Another cultural point of interest is the Terry County Quilt Trail. Established in 2003, it was the first quilt trail in Texas. Alongside the histories of local places and buildings, it offers a distinct regional cultural attraction to include in your travel plans.

Gomez and the Early Settlement History

Gomez is considered the first inhabited place in Terry County. It had a post office until 1926 and a school until 1941. Gomez Cemetery was established in 1902 in Gomez, the county’s first settlement; some of Terry County’s earliest settlers are buried there. The cemetery, post office and school offer different points of reference for the history of the place. The dates put the burial ground and former institutions in chronological context without reducing Gomez to a single historical marker.

Seasonal Nature and Recreation

During migration, Gillham Pond becomes a seasonal habitat for ducks and geese; the number of birds varies by season. For nature enthusiasts, migration is therefore a changing seasonal highlight, distinct from year-round recreational offerings.

The Brownfield Family Aquatic Center offers a different kind of experience. Its amenities include swimming lanes, a one-meter diving board, a lazy river, a beach-like entry and water slides. If you’re looking for water activities rather than seasonal wildlife watching, the center offers a specific place to visit in Brownfield. The two options appeal to different interests and can be considered separately when planning your trip.

Tasting and Events

Farmhouse Vineyards welcomes visitors to the Whitehouse-Parker tasting room in Brownfield. Taste of Terry County is an annual local attraction in Brownfield. Wine tasting and the event offer two distinct reasons to visit.

Trip Planning and Hotel Search

The Aquatic Center and tasting room add options for other recreational interests. Birdlife at the pond is seasonal and tied to migration; Taste of Terry County adds another local attraction in Brownfield.
