Museums spanning county history and railroads
The Milam County Historical Museum traces history from the early Spanish missions and the Texas Revolution through the 20th century. Its military history exhibits focus on veterans from Milam County and include, among others, the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The museum also includes a restored 19th-century log cabin. Its furnishings illustrate pioneer life. The museum is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Milam County Railroad Museum focuses on the county’s railroad history. It preserves artifacts from the early days of railroading in Milam County. A 900-square-foot diorama shows Cameron as it looked in the 1940s. A working HO-scale model railroad is also built into an 18-by-40-foot model. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The two museums offer different perspectives: the Historical Museum connects several historical periods with military history and pioneer life. The Railroad Museum focuses on the development of the railroad and a specific view of Cameron in the 1940s.
Railroad heritage and historic sites in Rockdale
The restored Rockdale I&GN Depot preserves original items from everyday station life: the station agent’s desk, as well as the telegraph and ticket counters. The historic railroad heritage also includes two named railcars: the “Cheyenne Mountain,” a Missouri Pacific Diner No. 36, and Missouri Pacific Caboose No. 12263. Together, the preserved furnishings and railcars give Rockdale’s railroad story a tangible form.
The Kay Theater in Rockdale is listed as a “Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.” It hosts special events and weddings, as well as music and theater performances and film screenings. Bridge Park has picnic areas alongside preserved historic bridges and a calaboose. The Burlington Calaboose in the park is one of only four surviving calabooses in Milam County. If you are interested in the history of places like these, the park combines recreation areas with a tangible connection to the past.
Parks and green spaces
In Rockdale, Sumuel Park offers a walking path and a butterfly garden. Veterans Park has picnic areas, a jogging trail, play areas, and lighted tennis courts. It also has a municipal swimming pool that is open seasonally. The two parks offer different ways to spend time outdoors; be sure to factor in the pool’s seasonal opening when planning.
Wilson-Ledbetter Park in Cameron covers 25 acres and has picnic areas and hiking and biking trails. The park is also home to a diverse range of wildlife. The Triangle Demonstration Garden focuses on water-efficient landscaping. Its areas include “Wildscape,” “Herbs,” “Roses,” and “EarthKind”; there is also a pavilion. At the Rockdale Country Club & Golf Course, gently rolling terrain and tall post oaks shape the landscape.
Regional history and events
Milam County is one of twelve counties in the Brazos Region of the El Camino Real de los Tejas State Trail. Roadside markers recall the history of the San Xavier missions. The mission buildings no longer exist, and there are no sites associated with the mission history that visitors can visit along the trail.
The Rockdale Fair and the Rockdale Rodeo are held at Rockdale Fair Park. If you want to include either event in your trip, check the event dates in advance. The Rockdale Fair Association promotes livestock and agricultural activities for students from Milam County.
