Kerr County: River Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Kerr County
The Guadalupe River and its tributaries drain Kerr County. The approximately six-mile public River Trail runs along the river and is intended for walking and cycling. The area also offers nature-related attractions, historic sites and cultural activities. This lets you consider different interests during your stay rather than focusing your trip on just one activity.
Trails Along the River and in the Park
The River Trail has access points at Kerrville-Schreiner Park, G Street, Lehmann & Monroe Park, Louise Hays Park, Riverside Nature Center, Lowry Park and Dietert Center. These locations give you several reference points for finding your way; the trail description gives an approximate total length of six miles. At Kerrville-Schreiner Park, all trails are multi-use trails for hiking and cycling and are currently open. Check for notices about possible temporary closures before your visit.
River access at Riverside in Kerrville-Schreiner Park is currently unavailable. If you plan to use this access point, check the latest notices before you travel. During peak season, boat and bicycle rentals are available at Louise Hays Park and Kerrville-Schreiner Park; you should also check their current availability in advance.
Nature Watching and Outdoor Activities
Riverside Nature Center offers birdwatching, wildflower walks, a butterfly garden, a nature trail and access to the River Trail. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; check the opening hours again before your visit. Its combination of nature activities and trail access makes the Center a useful point of reference for visitors who want to spend time outdoors.
Kerr Wildlife Management Area encompasses 6,459 acres of Edwards Plateau habitat at the headwaters of the North Fork of the Guadalupe River. Animals found there include white-tailed deer, northern bobwhite, javelinas, wild turkeys, reptiles and migratory birds. The terrain in Kerr County is rolling to hilly, with elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 feet above sea level. The Guadalupe River and its tributaries drain the county.
Recreational activities also vary: the 23.5-acre Flat Rock Park is used by kayakers, joggers, cyclists and hikers. Golf can be played at the Scott Schreiner Municipal Golf Course in Kerrville. These examples offer different starting points for planning your day without assuming a particular itinerary.
