Galveston offers coastal scenery, waterfront attractions and a rich history. At Galveston Island State Park, public access leads from the beach and Gulf Coast waters through coastal prairie to the wetlands along the bay. Other highlights include a ten-story living rainforest, historic ships and museums covering a range of subjects. When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether nature, waterfront attractions or cultural history will be the focus of your trip.

Coastal Scenery and Nature

Galveston Island State Park protects 2,000 acres of an upper Gulf Coast barrier island ecosystem. More than 300 bird species have been recorded there. East End Lagoon Nature Preserve offers another perspective on the landscape, encompassing 675 acres of coastal prairie and wetlands. A nature trail there is about half a mile long.

There are different ways to enjoy an active visit in nature. The Jenkins Bayou Paddling Trail is a moderately challenging 3.3-mile round trip. At about half a mile, the nature trail is shorter than the 3.3-mile round-trip paddling route.

Waterfront Attractions

The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier offers family-oriented attractions, including rides over the water. Moody Gardens offers a different kind of attraction: the Rainforest Pyramid is a ten-story living rainforest. Palm Beach features a 650-foot lazy river, which operates seasonally.

At Kemah Boardwalk, rides sit alongside Galveston Bay. The Boardwalk also hosts live concerts and festivals throughout the year. If you’re weighing nature, rides and events against one another, you’ll find different focuses here rather than one uniform kind of visit.

Ships, History and Museums

The 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA is the official tall ship of Texas and one of only three ships of its kind worldwide that still sail actively. Galveston Historic Seaport offers a historic harbor tour and dolphin watching aboard the 50-foot, twin-engine motor yacht Seagull II.

The USS Cavalla combines a visit with a connection to history: the Galveston Naval Museum offers a self-guided tour of the submarine. On January 21, 1971, the USS Cavalla became a museum ship at Seawolf Park in Galveston. At the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum, visitors can step aboard a decommissioned offshore drilling rig. Interactive exhibits explain offshore oil and gas operations; the museum is designed for self-guided visits.

There are other places to explore architecture and collections. Moody Mansion is a historic residence completed in 1895. The 1892 Bishop’s Palace, also known as Gresham House, is a related building in the East End Historic District. The Bryan Museum’s collection spans more than 12,000 years. It is displayed in seven permanent galleries, along with a special exhibitions gallery whose display changes every three months.

Art and Events

The Galveston Arts Center presents contemporary art in exhibitions and organizes the recurring Galveston ArtWalk. Hands-on art classes and workshops round out the offerings. You can choose between exhibition visits and formats centered on getting hands-on with art.

Getting Around and Choosing a Hotel Location

The toll-free Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry runs between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula; its schedule may vary due to operational conditions. The peninsula is a very narrow strip of land in Galveston County between the eastern part of Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Check the schedule for your planned crossing.

On Galveston Island, the Galveston Island Trolley provides bus and rail connections between hotels and attractions; schedules vary seasonally. Island Transit routes connect Galveston’s coastal Seawall with the historic Downtown Strand District, also with schedules that vary seasonally. These connections can be a practical point of comparison when choosing a hotel: consider which attractions matter to you and check which schedule fits your plans.
