Gillespie County Between Nature, History, and Wine
Accommodation in Gillespie County
Gillespie County offers several appealing ways to experience nature, history, and local life: you can explore trails through diverse landscapes, discover historic sites, or learn about wine and local products. Attractions range from museums and ranch history to parks and recurring events.
Ranch History and Historic Sites
The LBJ Ranch near Stonewall was the personal home of President Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson, and their family. The visitor experience includes a scenic drive and stops at the Junction School, the reconstructed birthplace, the Johnson Cemetery, and the Show Barn. To access the ranch, visitors pick up a free driving permit at the LBJ State Park and Historic Site Visitor Center between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The visitor center is located at 199 Park Road 52, Stonewall, TX 78671.
Fort Martin Scott also combines history with a way to get outdoors. Founded in 1848, this pre-Civil War military outpost is one of the earliest frontier forts. A nature trail about half a mile long follows Baron's Creek and ends at a bird blind. The route therefore combines a look at early fort history with a specific destination along the way.
In Fredericksburg, the National Museum of the Pacific War is dedicated to all those who served in the Pacific War. The six-acre campus includes the George H.W. Bush Gallery and the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, as well as the Plaza of the Presidents, the Japanese Garden of Peace, the Memorial Courtyard, and the Pacific Combat Zone. Exhibits there cover carrier aviation and PT boats, alongside demonstrations and reenactments on a Living History Battlefield.
The Pioneer Museum Complex in downtown Fredericksburg spans 3.5 acres and features buildings, artifacts, and exhibits about the history of the region's early pioneers. Several times a year, events with museum staff in period clothing are also held; these include storytelling, rope making, soap making, and sheep shearing. The Historic Walking Tour offers another perspective on the community: its 30 stops in the National Historic District cover the architecture, people, and places that shaped Fredericksburg. The Vereins Kirche is an octagonal building that served as the community's first meeting place, first church, and first school.
Musical connections also define Luckenbach, a scenic community in southeastern Gillespie County. Groups can arrange opportunities in advance to explore the grounds or hear about local history in the historic Dance Hall.
Nature Trails, Parkland, and Views
Cross Mountain Park sits on a historic hill of marl and limestone that rises to 1,951 feet. Native Americans used Cross Mountain as a lookout point. The main trail leads to the summit in 10 to 15 minutes; trail conditions can vary, so it's helpful to check current park information before visiting.
The Fredericksburg Nature Center encompasses eleven different habitats across ten acres. Its trail network extends for more than 6,600 feet and consists of two loop trails and a 600-yard wheelchair-accessible trail. The Handicapped Accessible Trail allows wheelchair users to access part of the trail and the bird blind. This makes it possible to experience different sections of trail and habitats within the same nature center.
Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park offers 330 acres of scenic parkland with walking trails, family picnic areas, sports facilities, and RV camping. Wildseed Farms has butterfly gardens surrounded by wheelchair-accessible walking paths. The farm also has a 55-acre vineyard that is currently in operation and offers wine tastings in its tasting room.
Wine, Markets, and Events
Gillespie County wineries range from working vineyards along Highway 290 to urban tasting rooms in downtown Fredericksburg. Wine tastings are offered at Becker Vineyards; private groups can also book tours of the winery's production area, with six preselected wine tastings.
During a seven-month season, the Fredericksburg Farmers Market brings locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as meat, eggs, and cheese, to downtown Fredericksburg each week. Recurring activities include cooking demonstrations and wine tastings. Vendors and offerings may change, so check current market information before your visit.
The Gillespie County Fair combines a carnival and midway with classic fair food, livestock judging, and agricultural and home economics exhibits. The program also includes arts and crafts, antique tractors, and pari-mutuel horse racing. The fair is considered the oldest continuously held county fair in Texas. Festivals and concerts take place at the Marktplatz throughout the year; check the relevant event calendar for specific dates.
