Fannin County combines outdoor experiences with a range of historic sites. At Bonham State Park, the lake and trails are part of the landscape; the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site and several museums offer other perspectives on the region’s history. The Bois D'Arc Trail leads into the mosaic of habitats in the Caddo National Grasslands, while the Barn Quilt Trail offers a scenic drive through the county. This gives you different options for planning your trip, with trails, cultural history, and a drive through the landscape as distinct highlights.

Lakes, Trails, and Landscape

Bonham State Park features a quiet, 65-acre lake and rolling trails. The Lake Loop Trail circles most of the lake: It is relatively flat and 1.3 miles long. This distinction is useful when planning your route: the park has rolling trails, while the named loop has its own relatively flat profile.

Lake Bonham is a separate 1,020-acre recreation destination in Fannin County. It is in North Texas, just south of the Texas-Oklahoma border, and belongs to the Prairies and Lakes region. Comparing their sizes helps distinguish the two lakes: the lake at Bonham State Park covers 65 acres, while Lake Bonham covers 1,020 acres. The names refer to two different destinations, not different names for the same lake.

The Caddo National Grasslands WMA is in Fannin County near Bonham. A walk or bike ride on the Bois D'Arc Trail offers a glimpse of the mosaic of habitats that make up the grasslands. Birds observed there include the Summer Tanager, Painted Bunting, and Field Sparrow. The trail combines walking or cycling with views of the grasslands’ habitats and birdlife.

History in the County

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site preserves Sam Rayburn’s 1916 home with original furnishings, photographs displayed for visitors, and personal belongings. The house is a National Historic Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark; it is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Sam Rayburn Museum focuses on the life and political career of Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn. Its design draws on the aesthetic of the United States Capitol. The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2005, and recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2008. The house and museum offer different emphases: one preserves the personal setting of his home, while the other documents Rayburn’s life and political career.

The Fannin County Museum of History is located in the historic Texas and Pacific Railway depot. Its wide range of exhibits on county history spans the pioneer era through the First and Second World Wars. The Fort Inglish Museum includes three original cabins from the region, a blacksmith shop, and a school/church. While the depot museum covers different periods in the county’s history, Fort Inglish presents historic buildings and cabins as tangible parts of the museum.

Getting There and Driving Through the County

To reach the Caddo National Grasslands WMA, take US 75 from Dallas. After 35 miles, take SH 121 toward Bonham; another 35 miles takes you to Bonham. From there, the WMA is about 15–20 miles northeast. The Fannin County Barn Quilt Trail offers another way to explore the county: it is a scenic drive spread across the county. Unlike the Bois D'Arc Trail, which you can experience on foot or by bike, the Barn Quilt Trail is a drive through the county.
