Bonham offers several distinct options for planning a trip: cultural history and art are complemented by hiking and cycling trails, as well as fishing opportunities at Bonham State Park. The distinctions below can help you get a sense of Bonham as a destination and tailor your hotel search to your interests.

Culture and History

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site preserves Sam Rayburn’s 1916 home, complete with its original furnishings, photographs and personal belongings. The focus is therefore on a specific home and its preserved contents. The house is designated a National Historic Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These three designations make the house’s heritage status a distinct part of its historical profile.

The Sam Rayburn Museum takes a different approach: it documents the life and political career of Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn. While the House State Historic Site focuses on Rayburn’s home and its furnishings, the museum focuses on his biography and political activities. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different perspectives on the same person.

Fort Inglish Village has a different architectural focus. It includes a stockade, three original cabins from the region, a blacksmith shop, as well as a school and a church. The range thus extends from fortifications and homes to crafts, school and church. Unlike the sites associated with Rayburn, this one focuses on a group of different types of buildings.

Trails and Fishing at Bonham State Park

Bonham State Park has more than seven miles of hilly hiking and cycling trails. If you plan to hike or cycle, you can take the trails’ hilly terrain into account when making your choice. These activities give the park a different focus from Bonham’s historic sites and arts program.

Bonham State Park Lake offers fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish. The lake thus complements the trail options with a dedicated fishing opportunity. Check the current regulations before fishing, as fishing rules may change.

From Bonham, the route to the park follows State Highway 78 southeast for 1.5 miles, then FM 271 southeast for another 2 miles, and finally Park Road 24. You can take this sequence of roads into account when planning your drive to the park.

Art and Public Barn Quilts

The Creative Arts Center offers a varied cultural program. This includes art exhibitions and opening receptions, beginner classes, group painting, activities for children, open-mic nights and music in the garden. The offerings range from exhibitions and hands-on art to performances and music. Individual programs may change; check in advance to see what’s happening during your travel dates.

Bonham has many colorful Barn Quilts that can be viewed by the public. Individual displays may change. If there’s a particular one you’d like to see, check before your visit to make sure it’s still on display.
