More than 560 miles of coastline along inland bays and the Gulf of Mexico define Calhoun County. Wetlands, marshland and birding sites give the landscape many different facets. The activities are also worth a closer look: nature trails, paddling routes and historic sites each offer a distinct focus for planning your trip.

Coastal Landscapes and Birding

The Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses 15,093 acres of freshwater and brackish wetlands, as well as coastal tallgrass prairie. Several miles of shoreline along Powderhorn Lake and Matagorda Bay form its northern and eastern boundaries. The Welder Flats WMA also illustrates the importance of coastal wetlands: it encompasses 1,480 acres of flooded coastal marshes in San Antonio Bay. The area is accessible by boat. Matagorda Island WMA, by contrast, is accessible only by boat; check current access conditions before visiting.

Those looking to combine nature trails with wildlife watching can find trails and a wildlife observation platform at Boggy Nature Park. A swamp covering approximately 53 acres stretches around the Formosa Wetlands Walkway. The walkway leads to the Alcoa Birding Tower, where you can observe the swamp and bay. Lighthouse Beach Marsh, meanwhile, focuses on the habitat of resident and migratory birds. In total, Calhoun County has eight observation sites on the Texas Birding Trail.

The Guadalupe Delta WMA also combines nature and outdoor activities. Its units are freshwater marshes that are prone to flooding from the Guadalupe River and adjacent bayous. Some areas are open daily for fishing, biking, hiking and wildlife viewing. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Choose Paddling Routes by Length and Course

The Seadrift Paddling Trail includes 20 miles of paddling routes accessible from four access points. A scenic trip follows the last six miles of the Guadalupe River to its mouth at Guadalupe Bay. The trail offers easy access from the riverbank; access conditions may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The Port O’Connor Paddling Trail offers a different focus: six interconnected routes add up to 40 miles along the shores of Espiritu Santo Bay and Matagorda Bay, as well as through the adjacent Mules Slough/Fish Pond saltwater marsh. In comparing the information, Seadrift stands out for its four access points and a specific stretch of river, while Port O’Connor stands out for its number of connected routes and longer overall distance. This lets you begin your choice by considering route and length, without reducing the two offerings to the same kind of paddling experience.

History by the Water

The La Salle Monument commemorates the landing of French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, in Texas in 1685. It marks approximately where he came ashore. The 22-foot statue, made of pink Texas granite, was erected for the 1936 Texas Centennial. The Calhoun County Museum adds to this historic context with artifacts from La Salle’s ship.

Indianola’s history is one of prosperity and destruction: in 1875, a hurricane partially destroyed the town; in 1886, another destroyed it completely. A historic marker is located on the beach at the end of SH 316. At the Calhoun County Museum, a diorama depicts the once-bustling town. The museum also tells the story of European explorers and the Karankawa, whom they encountered in the 16th century.

Another chapter in the region’s history is the Great Camel Experiment. In 1856 and 1857, 75 camels from Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey came ashore in Indianola. The Half Moon Reef Lighthouse also points to the region’s maritime past: the three-story, hexagonal lighthouse was built in 1858 and originally stood in Matagorda Bay.
