Port O'connor is a great place to explore waterways, go birdwatching and discover maritime history. Nature highlights include the paddling trail, bays and marshland, as well as seasonal whooping crane sightings. Matagorda Island also brings together nature and history: the island is home to many bird species, and visitors can see traces of two wartime periods there. When planning your visit, it is worth looking at the different activities and how to access them.

Paddling and Water Access

The Port O'Connor Paddling Trail consists of six interconnected sections and runs for more than 40 miles along the shores of Espiritu Santo Bay and Matagorda Bay, as well as through the Mules Slough/Fish Pond saltwater marsh. Its length and varied landscapes define the route; check conditions before setting out.

The Little Jetties access ramp is on public right-of-way where Washington Street ends at the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. A small parking lot is available. This provides a specific access point to the water, while the trail itself comprises several interconnected sections.

Birdwatching, Beach and Nature

Whooping cranes spend the winter on the side of Matagorda Island facing Espiritu Santo Bay. The island is home to 300 bird species and 20 protected species. At Boggy Nature Park, nature trails and a wildlife observation platform are among the visitor facilities. This offers different ways to observe nature: seasonal crane sightings on the island, and a nature park with trails and a platform.

Public access to birdwatching and scheduled tours at Powderhorn WMA is limited. Open observation days are held in spring; group tours are available by appointment. You do not need a permit for birdwatching, but access remains limited. Plan your visit around the available options.

The Sunday Beach area on Matagorda Island is open to the public and can be used without fees, permits or restrictions on activities. Check conditions before you go. King Fisher Beach has covered picnic areas with BBQ grills, showers, restrooms, a volleyball court and a fishing pier; check locally before your trip to confirm these facilities. The tides can leave interesting finds on the sandy beach.

Fishing in Shallow and Offshore Waters

The shallow waters off Port O'connor are known for trout, redfish and flounder. Offshore waters offer amberjack, grouper, kingfish, marlin, sailfish, snapper and tuna. These species distinguish the shallow waters from the fishing grounds farther offshore.

A boat is required for fishing at the major jetties, at Pass Cavallo or in the surf at Port O'connor. If you plan to fish in any of these areas, take the boat requirement into account and check conditions on the water before setting out.

Maritime History on Matagorda Island

The Andrew A. Rasmussen marker commemorates a 60-year maritime career. It also recalls that after the wreck of his schooner, the “Dorio and Doria,” in 1885, Rasmussen joined the Calhoun County Saluria Life Saving Service. These details connect a specific historical event with Rasmussen's subsequent service.

Matagorda Island Lighthouse was built in 1873 as a conical tower made of cast-iron plates, lined with brick and painted black. The lighthouse can be reached only by boat or aircraft; Matagorda Island itself is also accessible only by boat or air. Visitors can still see traces of the Civil War and World War II on the island.

Crawfish Festival

The Port O'Connor Crawfish Fest & Cookoff is held annually. The program includes vendor booths, food trucks and music, as well as a crawfish cook-off, a crawfish eating contest, crawfish dishes and a People's Choice tasting. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for that year's event; future details may change.
