Trinity takes its name from the Trinity River: the town was founded in the winter of 1872–73, and the river lies two miles to the southwest. This name connects the town's history with a specific feature of the landscape. Further chapters unfold through Lake Livingston and the history of Trinity County.

River Landscapes and Nature

Lake Livingston was created in the 1960s when the Trinity River was dammed. The lake offers recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to Trinity County. Near Groveton, Lake Livingston is associated with boating and fishing. Access points and operating conditions may change, so check current access points and conditions before planning a trip.

While Lake Livingston is associated with recreation and water activities, the Alabama Creek Wildlife Management Area is connected to nature through its place within the Davy Crockett National Forest. Different aspects are therefore in focus: leisure at the lake and the Wildlife Management Area's position within the National Forest.

History of Trinity County

In Trinity County, Sumpter and Groveton tell of different beginnings. Sumpter was the county's first seat of justice. Early settler Solomon Adams ran a small general store there; his log cabin also served as a hotel. Having both a store and a hotel in one log cabin connects trade and lodging in the settlement's history.

Groveton was established in 1882 in connection with the founding of the Trinity County Lumber Company sawmill. The town lies near the center of Trinity County at the intersection of State Highway 94 and U.S. Highway 287. Unlike Sumpter's role as the first county seat, Groveton's founding was connected to a sawmill.

The Trinity County Courthouse features Classical architectural elements. Its portico extends the full height of the building, and its Tuscan columns are arranged in pairs. A portico is a columned porch; here, it spans the full height of the courthouse. The courthouse grounds are used for parades, rallies, and festivals. Event schedules may change, so check the dates before planning a visit.

School, Architecture, and Remembrance

Construction of the Old Red Schoolhouse began in 1911; it had opened as a brick building by 1915 at the latest. It housed all grade levels until an adjacent high school was completed in 1928. This timeline distinguishes the schoolhouse's opening from the later end of its role in housing all grade levels.

The John Henley Hill House offers an earlier architectural point of reference: it was built from 1880 to 1882 and features elements of the Carpenter Gothic style. The Trinity County Museum displays historical artifacts, memorabilia, and photographs about the county's history. Glendale Cemetery remains a chronicle of Trinity County's history.
