Trails, historic buildings and agricultural heritage give Barnwell County its varied character. At Barnwell State Park, the Dogwood Interpretive Trail is an easy, 1.5-mile loop around the southernmost of two lakes. If you would rather choose between two hiking routes, maps are posted along the Fernhill Trail: the figure-eight route offers a shorter or longer hike. The trail is also suitable for cycling and birdwatching.

Trails and Parks

The two trails offer different points of reference for your planning: the Dogwood Interpretive Trail is clearly defined by its length and lakeside route, while maps at the Fernhill Trail let you choose between a shorter and a longer hike. Hiking, cycling and birdwatching are also possible activities there. When planning your day, you can weigh whether a set loop or a choice between two routes better suits your plans, without inferring a walking time from the distance figures.

To reach Barnwell State Park, visitors approaching from the north on I-95 can take Exit 57 and follow Highway 64 to Barnwell. The park is 7 miles northeast of Barnwell. Road conditions can change, so check your route before setting out.

The parks in Barnwell itself also offer a range of options. Fuller Park has a nine-hole disc golf course, a splash pad, a loop trail and wetlands. The Barnwell Farmers Market is also located there; check market dates and hours before visiting. Seasonal park offerings may vary, so it is worth checking current information about the facilities you plan to use. Kilkenny Park offers lakeside fishing access, as well as picnic tables and grills.

Local History and Culture

Several buildings at Barnwell State Park date from the 1930s and were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). They represent a different chapter in the park’s history from its trails and lakes. In Barnwell itself, Saint Andrew's Chapel was built in 1831; it is considered the oldest surviving original Catholic church in South Carolina. A freestanding vertical sundial stands in front of the Barnwell County courthouse. Joseph D. Allen donated it to Barnwell in 1858.

The changing uses of older buildings also tell a story about the county. A former church building in Barnwell was moved to Academy Street and is now used as the Circle Theatre, a performing arts center. In Blackville, construction of the Shamrock Hotel was completed around 1912. The town’s railroad depot was built around 1910; in 1985, it was moved to Court House Square and renovated. The James H. Hammond Museum in Blackville was dedicated in 1970.

The Barnwell County Museum displays exhibits and objects relating to the history and cultural heritage of the county and surrounding community. The Williston Museum, in turn, features hat-making tools that belonged to Joe Kelly Sr. These collections offer different ways to explore history: one focuses on the wider community, the other on specific objects and their owners.

Agricultural History and Regional Excursions

Williston’s asparagus history extends beyond a single harvest season. For more than 30 years, asparagus was shipped from there during two months each spring and delivered throughout the country. At one time, Williston shipped more asparagus than any other place in the world. The Agricultural Heritage Hands-On Learning Center offers students a learning program covering both the past and the future of agriculture. Together, these topics invite visitors to consider agricultural history from both a historical and a contemporary perspective.

God’s Acre Healing Springs is in Barnwell County just outside Blackville and includes artesian springs. The site adds a connection to the landscape to visits to museums and parks. If you would like to choose a focus for your trip, you can use trails and nature, local history or agricultural heritage as a starting point for planning your visits.
