Dillon County Between History and Nature
Accommodation in Dillon County
Dillon County can be explored through a range of travel interests: historic sites in Dillon and Latta sit alongside nature experiences at Little Pee Dee State Park. There are also theaters, museums, and other attractions. When planning, consider whether architecture, local history, hiking trails, or a particular events program will shape your stay.
Historic Dillon: Depot and Business District
Two historic districts in Dillon are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: a residential district and a business district. The largely preserved historic business district invites you to take a stroll through town. Along the way, you can also notice the ornamental features of the historic commercial buildings, most of which date from after 1903. Main Street United Methodist Church adds to the architectural impression with details from 1892.
Another distinctive structure is Dillon’s historic train depot. It was reconstructed in 1905 and remains active for CSX and Amtrak. If you plan to include the depot in your itinerary, check current operations in advance. The building’s history and its continuing active function meet here directly.
The renovated Dillon County Theatre is also a cultural venue. It is home to the MacArthur Avenue Players, who perform various plays each year. The theater also hosts concerts, competitions, and other events. Since event programs can change, check the schedule if you want to plan your visit around a performance or event.
Hiking Trails and Nature at Little Pee Dee State Park
Little Pee Dee State Park brings together waterways and swamp landscapes with geological features. The park includes 54-acre Lake Norton, where you can find bream, bass, and catfish. Visitors can also explore the Little Pee Dee River swamp and admire a Carolina Bay. This geological depression is considered unique to the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
Canoes and kayaks can be rented in the park for a trip on the water; life jackets and paddles are included. Rental availability may vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check before making plans. On land, the two trails described here differ mainly in length and route: the Beaver Pond Nature Trail is 1.5 miles long, an easy out-and-back trail that forms a loop at one end. The Longleaf Pine Trail runs for 2.1 miles as an easy out-and-back through a longleaf pine forest. The stated lengths make it easy to compare the walking distance you want. Trail details and conditions can change.
Home and Museum: Insights into History
The JW Dillon House was built in 1890, restored in the 1960s, and moved to its current location. Its layout brings the home to life: the ground floor has a parlor, an office, a living room, and a dining room; upstairs are five bedrooms. The furnishings reflect how the house might have been furnished in the early 20th century. This historical interpretation may change over time.
The Dillon County Museum in Latta is housed in a restored former medical and dental practice. The museum building was constructed in 1915. Documents, photographs, and other local historical objects offer a glimpse into life in Dillon County around the turn of the century. Items on display also include medical and dental equipment, agricultural equipment, military memorabilia, and indigo exhibits. Exhibit contents may change.
