Discover Barnwell: History and Parks
Accommodation in Barnwell
Barnwell offers historic buildings and cultural attractions, as well as parks and Lake Edgar Brown in the town center. The main points of interest are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: churches with different historical distinctions, a museum, a theater building, and a distinctive monument give the city a broad cultural profile.
Churches and Architectural History
Saint Andrew's Chapel is the earliest religious building in Barnwell and also the oldest surviving original Catholic church in South Carolina. These two distinctions refer to different geographic areas: one to Barnwell, the other to the state.
The Church of the Holy Apostles also offers a clear historical reference point. The building was constructed in 1856–57 and added to the National Register of Historic Sites in South Carolina in 1972. The construction period and the later listing are two different dates that provide further historical context for the building.
Museum and Cultural Sites
Numerous exhibits and objects at the Barnwell County Museum illustrate the history and cultural heritage of Barnwell County and the surrounding community. One section is devoted to Indigenous peoples of the Americas; the museum also includes artifacts from the American Civil War. Visitors who want to explore Barnwell's history beyond its churches and buildings will find additional historical topics here in one place.
The Circle Theatre building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now used as a performing arts center. The Sundial, in turn, is a unique vertical monument in front of the Barnwell County Courthouse in Barnwell, South Carolina. The three sites represent different forms of cultural heritage: a museum, a theater building, and a monument.
Lake Edgar Brown and the Parks
Lake Edgar Brown is a 100-acre lake in the center of Barnwell. Fishing access is available at Kilkenny Park. So if fishing is part of your plans, Kilkenny Park is the specific place to go.
Fuller Park has a playground, a splash pad, and a nine-hole disc golf course. These three amenities are quite different and offer specific ideas for how to spend your time in the park. Collins Park features historic markers, adding to the cultural themes also found at the churches and museum.
Barnwell Farmers Market
The pavilion in Fuller Park is reserved for the Barnwell Farmers Market on Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on the fourth Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., May through October. Hours vary by day of the week; check the dates before your trip if you plan to visit the market.
