Tioga County: Gorge, Trail, and Culture
Accommodation in Tioga County
Pine Creek Gorge shapes Tioga County with a landscape on a grand scale: in some places, the gorge is more than 1,000 feet deep and over a mile wide. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Lookouts, trails, and scenic routes offer different ways to explore this striking part of the region.
Gorge Views and Landscapes
Leonard Harrison State Park sits on the eastern rim of the gorge. It offers modern facilities, a visitor center, and panoramic views of the Gorge. The Rim Trail in Colton Point State Park leads to viewpoints with geological and natural vistas. Together, the two parks show how the experience of a gorge can unfold through both sweeping views and individual vantage points.
Beyond the Gorge, the landscape offers different ways to experience nature. Hills Creek State Park covers 407 acres in Tioga County. Its features include abundant wildlife, a lake, and several warm-water fish species. Those interested in wildlife and waterways will find a distinct natural setting here, alongside the canyon experience.
The Pine Creek Rail Trail: Length, Uses, and Route
The Pine Creek Rail Trail is a multi-use trail more than 65 miles long. It is designated for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Its grade is 2 percent along its entire length, and it runs from Wellsboro to Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Its length, consistent grade, and range of permitted uses offer practical guidance when planning your time on the trail.
An extension seamlessly connects downtown Wellsboro with more than 65 miles of the Pine Creek Rail Trail, providing pedestrians, runners, and cyclists with a safe, direct connection. Future extensions may change infrastructure details, so it is advisable to check the current route when planning a specific trip. Another guide for a drive through the region is a scenic loop that runs from Wellsboro to the western rim of the gorge, follows it south, and ends in Cedar Run.
When choosing a hotel, your main plans may be the deciding factor: if you intend to spend most of your time on the trail, at viewpoints, or at an event, check the location of your accommodation in relation to your planned destinations. Historic Route 6, scenic Route 287, and Route 15 serve as access roads to Tioga County.
History, Art, and Events
In Blossburg, the Coal Festival takes place each year over Memorial Day weekend, commemorating the history of coal mining in the town and surrounding region. In Wellsboro, Dickens of a Christmas brings together horse-drawn carriage rides, Christmas carolers, arts and crafts and food vendors, and ice sculptures. The festival also includes opportunities to meet characters from the novels of Charles Dickens.
Other annual events bring different highlights throughout the year. The Tioga County Fair takes place every August. The annual Plein Air Festival includes events at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center. The Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival in Wellsboro usually honors Pennsylvania’s state flower, Kalmia latifolia, in June. The program includes a large parade, craft vendors, live music, food, a photo contest, and the crowning of the Laurel Queen. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates and program in advance.
Lasting traces of regional history can also be discovered: a restored wrought-iron bridge dating from 1879 over Marsh Creek preserves an important part of Pennsylvania’s transportation heritage. The Wellsboro Glass Historical Association Museum displays donated artifacts and exhibits about regional glassmaking.
