Elk County: Elk, Water, and History
Accommodation in Elk County
Explore Elk County from different perspectives: wild elk, landscapes along lakes and rivers, and cultural and historical themes all shape trip ideas. The scale varies, too: the Elk Scenic Drive passes through parts of five counties and includes five state parks. When planning your hotel stay, you can first consider whether wildlife watching, water activities, or culture will be your main focus.
Elk and Landscapes Across Multiple Stops
The Elk Scenic Drive is a 127-mile loop through parts of five counties and includes five state parks. Several stops offer opportunities to watch the wild elk herd; the loop passes through a region with a variety of wildlife and recreational activities. The route is therefore a tour through several areas, not just a single destination.
The Elk Country Visitor Center is home to the largest wild elk herd in the northeastern United States. The center has wildlife trails and viewing blinds. Visitors can also watch elk today in meadows and open areas scattered throughout the Elk State Forest. Both designated viewing spots and the state forest’s open spaces are part of the nature experiences described here.
Lakes, Rivers, and Two State Parks
Elk State Park covers 3,192 acres in the rugged mountains of northern Pennsylvania. At East Branch Lake, the park offers boating with motorboats of unlimited horsepower and water skiing. The lake and nearby streams are stocked with warm- and cold-water fish. The park has several facets, from its mountainous setting to its water-based activities.
At 100 acres, Bendigo State Park is much smaller. It sits in a small valley surrounded by scenic hills, and the East Branch of the Clarion River flows through the park. Unlike the water activities at East Branch Lake, the description of Bendigo focuses on its valley and river landscapes, as well as programs about natural, cultural, and historical resources. These programs take place year-round.
Culture, Craftsmanship, and Regional Orientation
The annual Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous brings together beginner, amateur, and professional chainsaw carvers who share this art form with the public. In Ridgway, the “Lily of the Valley” National Historic Register District includes mansions and homes, including “Millionaires Row.” These offer two different cultural perspectives: a public event centered on chainsaw carving and a historic district with named residences.
Specific features also shape the character of the Clarion-Little Toby Trail. These include scenic river panoramas, a suspension bridge over Little Toby, and numerous small waterfalls. Another local stop is the Straub Brewery Tap Room & Visitor Center, with craft-brewed beers and fresh, locally sourced foods made by local artisans.
For an overview of Elk County, the Elk County Wayfinding Maps show townships, roads, trails, bodies of water, and 85 attractions. Detailed maps are also available for the Benezette/Weedville area, the Borough of Johnsonburg, the Borough of Ridgway, and the City of St. Marys. If you’re looking for a hotel in Elk County, first decide what you want to focus on during your trip—such as elk watching, water activities, or culture—then choose the experiences you want to shape your journey.
