In Allegheny, expansive park trails meet lakes, historic sites and seasonal events. There are also river trails, industrial heritage and destinations in Pittsburgh that explore different chapters of the region’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, first consider which themes you want your trip to focus on: nature, culture, winter activities or a combination of these.

Parks, Lakes and Trails

The Allegheny County park system includes nine parks with activities, sports, events and year-round programs. Together, the parks offer more than 200 miles of multi-use trails open to walkers, hikers, joggers, cyclists and horseback riders. The trails offer a versatile way to spend time outdoors; the activity you choose depends on your own plans.

At 3,089 acres, North Park is the largest park in the Allegheny County park system. Its distinctive features include a 66-hectare lake and a boathouse built in 1934. The park offers opportunities for kayaking and fishing. Deer Lakes Park offers another fishing option: it has three lakes where year-round fishing is available in stocked waters. The two parks are distinguished by their bodies of water: North Park features a large lake and the historic boathouse, while Deer Lakes Park has three lakes for fishing.

South Park combines extensive hiking and biking trails with an 18-hole golf course. Its amphitheater hosts the free Summer Concert Series on Fridays in summer. If you’re planning to attend a concert, check the specific event dates in advance. Another historic feature of South Park is the Cascades: this man-made water feature dates back to 1930 and was built from layered rock quarried in the park.

River Trails and Regional History

The Three Rivers Heritage Trail offers a different way to explore the area. It comprises 35 miles of non-linear trail segments along both banks of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers in Allegheny County. The trail system is designated a National Recreation Trail and is also a recognized Heritage Trail. The Three Rivers Water Trail, in turn, is designated a Pennsylvania Water Trail.

The history of individual places can also be explored through specific crafts and buildings. The Oliver Miller Homestead showcases traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, metalworking, baking and woodworking. The paved Hartwood Acres Sculpture Garden Paths wind around the historic Hartwood Acres Mansion and lead to 14 unique sculptures by regional and national artists. Experience industrial heritage at Carrie Blast Furnaces: Blast Furnaces No. 6 and 7 are a National Historic Landmark; today, the site offers tours, workshops, exhibitions and events.

In Pittsburgh, the Fort Pitt Museum in Point State Park explores western Pennsylvania’s central role in the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War and the beginnings of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh’s Nationality Rooms include 30 museum-quality rooms. They represent the cultures of various ethnic groups that settled in Allegheny County, as well as cultures that made Pittsburgh their home. The Old Allegheny County Jail Museum preserves part of the cell blocks of the former jail in a building completed in 1886.

Activities Throughout the Year

For winter sports, Boyce Park is a standout in the Allegheny County park system: it has the system’s only downhill skiing and snow tubing hills. Skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing are open to all ages and ability levels. Since these are seasonal activities, check operating status before you go. Boyce Park also offers more than 6,000 square feet of climbing surfaces and challenges at its Bouldering Park. The bouldering walls are rearranged at least twice a year, usually in spring and fall, to create new challenges. There is also a paved pump track nearly 800 feet long.

A visit to a market can also add a seasonal touch to your stay. For the 2026 season, the Bethel Park Farmers' Market at South Park is scheduled as a weekly Tuesday gathering. Offerings include fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, handmade breads and baked goods, homemade jams and sauces, and other specialties. Since dates and products may vary, check the calendar and current offerings before your visit.

Getting There and Planning Your Hotel Stay

Route 28X connects Pittsburgh International Airport, Robinson Towne Center, Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland seven days a week. All vehicles on the route are wheelchair accessible. Transit services can change; if you plan to use the connection, check its current operating status before traveling. This makes it easier to connect your journey with the experiences that matter to you during your stay.

This gives your trip planning a direction without requiring all the destinations to have the same character. If you’re planning your trip around events, market visits or seasonal activities, check the relevant dates or operating status.
