Venango County offers something for a range of travel interests: oil history, hiking trails, waterfalls, and cultural events. The legacy of the early oil boom is especially prominent, reflected in museums, historic sites, and the former railroad line. You can plan your stay around historical themes, outdoor activities, or an event date.

Following the Trail of Oil History

The Drake Well Replica encloses the well where Edwin L. Drake struck oil in 1859, helping establish the modern petroleum industry. The replica operates seasonally; check current operating details before your trip. The Drake Well Museum and Park sits on the banks of Oil Creek in scenic Venango County. Its outdoor experience is organized into five themes on the history of the petroleum industry.

Oil Creek State Park tells this story through oil boom towns, wells, and early transportation. In historic Pithole City, visitors can read interpretive and directional signs along the streets. The outdoor grounds are open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset. A separate note concerns the Egbert-Mullins-Koos House in Franklin, Pennsylvania, built in 1859. It serves the Venango County Historical Society as an exhibition space, research library, and archive; tour times may vary seasonally.

In the wider region, the state-designated Oil Region National Heritage Area includes Venango County and the eastern part of Crawford County.

Trails, Water, and Scenery

Two routes offer different points of reference when choosing a trail: the Samuel Justus Trail is a 7-mile section of a 30-mile trail along the former route of the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The paved Oil Creek State Park Trail, by contrast, is 9.7 miles long and is a multi-use trail through Oil Creek Valley, suitable for activities including cycling. It is a local section of the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail, which is still under development. Their length, surface, and connection to the former railroad line give you specific features to consider when weighing your options.

Two Mile Run County Park combines a 144-acre lake with nearly 38 miles of hiking trails. There are four waterfalls along Oil Creek; the best time to view them is considered to be from early to late spring. These nature experiences therefore differ both in form and in seasonal timing.

In Oil City, the Oil City Marina is one of only three public access points to the Allegheny River in Venango County. It also has a boat ramp. For visitors planning to include the river in their trip, public access and the ramp are two useful points of reference.

Culture and Events

A separate cultural note concerns Franklin, Pennsylvania. The Barrow-Civic Theatre in Franklin is a performing arts venue with a year-round program. DeBence Antique Music World in Franklin houses more than 100 antique mechanical musical instruments dating from the mid-19th century to the 1940s. Museum hours may change.

A separate event note concerns Franklin, Pennsylvania: the three-day Franklin Applefest takes place in downtown Franklin and features more than 300 arts, crafts, and food vendors. Dates and programming may change from year to year. In Oil City, the Oil Heritage Festival takes over the entire downtown every summer; its dates and programming may also change from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around either festival, check the dates for each event.
