Juniata brings together historic places, regional traditions and the Juniata River. At the Tuscarora Academy Museum, you can explore the history of an early school; a covered bridge, exhibits at the courthouse and the Water Trail offer other perspectives. To plan your hotel stay, you can first consider whether culture, a recurring event or river activities should be the focus of your trip.

History in Buildings and Landscape

The Tuscarora Academy Museum is housed in a building originally constructed as a church in 1816 and converted into Juniata County’s first secondary school in 1836. The collection includes artifacts from local businesses, institutions, trades, agriculture and family life. Two rooms recreate the boarding rooms of the academy’s students; individual exhibits may change.

The Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge also tells the story of the region: it is the longest surviving covered bridge in Pennsylvania. The Book Indian Mound offers a different historical perspective. It has been identified as a burial mound of the earliest communities of the Clemson Island Culture in central Pennsylvania during the Late Woodland period, from about 700 to 1300 AD. The site has been historically disturbed in the past.

At the Juniata County Courthouse, visitors can see a rotating exhibit of artifacts from Juniata County in the hallways. The history of the courthouse’s construction is also documented in specific terms: the contract set January 1, 1875, as the completion date, and the total cost was $63,000. The Tuscarora Valley Primitive Baptist Church was founded on May 17, 1794.

Juniata County’s agricultural land, wooded mountains and the gentle course of the Juniata River all contribute to its scenic appeal. Together, the landscape and river add another perspective on the region’s historical themes.

Juniata River and Waterways

The Juniata River Water Trail is more than 150 miles long and is designated a National Recreation Trail. Both branches of the river are Class I waterways; under normal conditions, their rapids and riffles are considered suitable for beginners. Check conditions and potential hazards before putting in.

One specific access point to the Juniata River is Lewistown Narrows Access in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County. It provides access to the river for fishing and boating. If you plan these activities, you can consider the access point and water conditions as part of your day’s itinerary.

Events and Regional Traditions

The annual Juniata County Fair brings together agricultural exhibits, food, livestock shows, races, derbies and family-friendly entertainment. The program also includes carousel rides, live music, truck and tractor pulls, rodeos and petting zoos. Exhibits featuring home arts, crafts, horticulture and 4-H projects round out the offerings. Specific events may vary from year to year, so check the dates and offerings for the year you plan to visit.

Port Royal Speedway is located on the Juniata County Fairgrounds. Races are held there every weekend from March through October, including sprint car, late model and pro stock races, as well as events in the High Limit Racing Series and Lucas Oil Late Models. Race lineups change by season. The fair and speedway offer different event highlights; for both, it is worth checking the dates for your planned travel period.

Goose Day has been celebrated as a tradition in the Juniata River Valley for more than two centuries. Local restaurants serve goose dishes and other special recipes featuring goose. Celebration dates and participating businesses vary. Those interested in regional food culture can consider Goose Day as a special occasion when planning their trip.
