French Azilum brings together the history of a planned settlement and the Susquehanna River: the site was built for refugees fleeing the French Revolution. Bradford County offers other points of interest for travelers looking to include historic sites, diverse museum collections, and waterside activities in their plans.

History and Collections

At French Azilum, an original foundation of the settlement has been excavated for public viewing. Admission includes a self-guided tour of the grounds and a guided tour of the LaPorte House. This lets you combine a walk around the grounds with a visit to the house. A restored blacksmith shop is back in operation, offering live blacksmithing demonstrations and classes, usually in early June. Check the specific dates when planning your trip.

The Bradford County Historical Society Museum is located in the former Bradford County Jail in the Towanda Historic District. Exhibits in the former cellblocks make the building’s past use part of the museum visit. The museum also has a genealogical and historical research library. The Tioga Point Museum offers a different focus: founded in 1895, it was established to provide a permanent home for local history and archaeology, as well as art and artifacts from cultures around the world. Its collection includes rare books, samurai weapons, and objects from the Pacific region, as well as stone and bead-decorated objects from Indigenous American cultures.

Smaller subject areas add to the picture, too. The Philip P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum is located in Rome in the house where Bliss lived. He wrote the music for Horatio Spafford’s text “It Is Well With My Soul.” The Heritage Village and Farm Museum grew out of an effort to preserve old farming equipment from private collections. The Home Textile Tool Museum includes a Federal-style house and an English threshing barn. Its exhibits include flax-processing equipment, a working flax wheel, a loom, and a functioning blacksmith shop.

Knapp’s Covered Bridge is also known as Luther’s Mills Bridge and Brown’s Creek Covered Bridge. The bridge is 95 feet long and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its listing, length, and various names offer concrete points of reference if you are including historic structures in your travel plans.

The Susquehanna and Outdoor Activities

The North Branch Susquehanna River Water Trail runs from New York into Bradford County. Paddling, boating, and fishing are all possible on the trail, which also takes visitors past historic sites. The North Branch stretch of the Susquehanna River is considered a fishing area for smallmouth bass, a type of black bass. This offers different ways to enjoy the river: a trip on the water, fishing, or exploring historic sites along the trail.

A new access point to the North Branch Susquehanna River opened at the historic French Azilum site on August 13, 2026; the opening was reported on August 14. It provides public access to the river and includes a concrete boat ramp for non-motorized boats. Bradford County’s scenic landscape is characterized by rolling hills, valleys, and peaceful countryside. Mt. Pisgah County Park covers approximately 600 acres and is home to a diverse and abundant range of wildlife.

Drives, Routes, and Scenic Overlooks

Quilted Corners of Wyalusing combines a scenic drive along country roads through the agricultural landscape of Wyalusing and the surrounding area with an OnCell audio tour. Endless Gravel offers four bikepacking routes ranging from 115 to 430 miles, each with a day-by-day itinerary. The formats offer different experiences: an audio-guided drive on one hand, and multiple route lengths for bikepacking on the other.

There are two other named places for river views. Wyalusing Rocks, also called Prayer Rocks, overlooks a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Susquehanna River. The Marie Antoinette Lookout offers views of the river, mountains, French Azilum, and a French refugee settlement established sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century. Together with the museums and river, these places offer several different ways to shape your stay.

When choosing your hotel, you can first decide which of these themes matter for your trip: historic places and collections, waterside activities, or outdoor drives and routes. This lets you plan around the experiences you are looking for in Bradford County.
