Discover Blair: Nature, Trails and Railroad History
Accommodation in Blair
Discover Blair through the contrast between its landscapes and railroad history. At Canoe Creek State Park, the lake, wetlands and old-growth forests shape the scenery. You can encounter railroad history at historic sites, museums and the Horseshoe Curve. There are also trails, theaters and activities centered on nature and water. When planning your stay, consider whether to focus on landscapes and trails, historic technology or cultural events.
Landscapes, Birds and Trails
Canoe Creek State Park covers 961 acres and includes a 155-acre lake. Wetlands, former fields and old-growth forests provide habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Historic lime kilns are among the park’s defining features. Nature programs, an education center and guided hikes offer additional ways to engage with the landscape and its history.
The Lower Trail offers a longer route: it runs for almost 17 miles from near Canoe Creek State Park in Blair County northeast to near Alexandria in Huntingdon County. Some sections along the trail are designated as “Important Birding Areas.” Bald eagles and osprey have been spotted there. The route therefore runs clearly northeast and passes designated birding areas, though sightings cannot be expected on every visit.
Walking routes to historic sites can also be described precisely. From the parking lot at the picnic area, a half-mile trail winds through the woods to the historic Lemon House; there is no parking at the house itself. From the park’s visitor center, you can reach it via the boardwalk or Old Gallitzin Road. A two-mile walking trail leads to the Staple Bend Tunnel from the trailhead. These two distances refer to different destinations and starting points.
Railroad History on Foot and in Exhibits
The Allegheny Portage Railroad was the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains. More than 15 miles of trails at the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site follow sections of the original railroad route. The Summit Level Visitor Center explores this heritage through various exhibit areas and models, including a life-size replica of a canal boat, the Lafayette locomotive, Portage Railroad artifacts, and hands-on, interactive exhibits. Historic objects and illustrative models are presented side by side.
The Railroaders Memorial Museum features railroad artifacts, immersive environments and life-size dioramas of railroad workers. Orientation films also introduce visitors to Altoona’s railroad community. The museum includes a collection of rail vehicles on display at the Harry Bennett Memorial Roundhouse, which also houses a working 105-foot turntable. At Horseshoe Curve, meanwhile, visitors can watch trains travel around a 2,375-foot curve in the rail line. An observation area, an exhibit hall and a museum shop are also part of this attraction.
Other sites offer further glimpses into history. Fort Roberdeau includes a reconstructed fort from the American Revolutionary War, buildings and a smelting house, as well as a restored 19th-century farmhouse and barn. Baker Mansion is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1849, with historic rooms and exhibits. Each site presents history in its own way, from a reconstructed fort to the architecture and furnishings of a mansion.
Culture, City Life and Further Excursions
The Mishler Theatre is a notable historic and architectural landmark. Its program includes theatrical performances, orchestra concerts, ballets and appearances by nationally recognized artists. As the schedule changes, check the current dates if you’re hoping to include a performance in your travel plans.
In Altoona, the Altoona Transportation Center offers local bus, intercity bus and rail connections. Railroad City Brewing is located in historic downtown Altoona and offers craft ales; the selection may change. Alongside the historic railroad sites, transportation links and a downtown destination offer different considerations for planning your stay.
Canal Basin Park combines history with a play structure shaped like a canal boat. Its visitor center is located in the restored Victorian Reiser House. Laguna Splash offers a lazy river, a wave pool, slides and water play areas for children; individual facilities may change. Whether you’re planning a museum visit, a performance, a walk through the landscape or a water-based activity, Blair offers a range of themes to help shape your stay.
