Discover Junction City
Accommodation in Junction City
Junction City is near Eugene in the southern Willamette Valley. Historic homes and early town history, the annual Scandinavian Festival, and wine give a stay different points of focus. You can plan your trip around learning more about the town’s history, experiencing a summer event, or getting to know the local wineries.
Historic Homes and Local History
Two historic homes mark different points in time: the Dr. Norman L. Lee Museum was built in 1872 as the home of Junction City’s first doctor; the Mary E. Pitney House Museum was built in 1874. The Lee Museum’s collection includes artifacts from the town’s early years and a large model of downtown Junction City as it appeared around 1910. In one home, you can encounter both objects from the town’s early history and a depiction of downtown at a specific point in time.
The doctor’s personal work tools are also part of the Lee Museum: visitors can see his early medical instruments and books. A walking tour by the Junction City Historical Society guides visitors to historic sites with the help of a brochure and a map. Audio recordings also provide stories and information about the sites. The map and audio offer two ways to explore local history: finding your way to historic places and hearing the stories that accompany them.
Another detail of the town’s history concerns Junction City’s first jail. It was moved to the Pitney House property in 1998, near the house. Check whether the jail is accessible before visiting.
Scandinavian Festival in August
If you’d like to plan your trip around a recurring event, the Scandinavian Festival offers a specific date to keep in mind: it takes place from the second Thursday through Sunday in August and celebrates Junction City’s cultural heritage each summer. Dancers perform traditional dances for visitors and teach them the dances. The festival thus combines performances with passing on the dances.
Wineries and Scenery
Wine is another local attraction. Walnut Ridge produces fine Oregon wines and is certified both LIVE and Salmon-Safe. Its tasting room offers 360-degree views of vineyards, farms, hills and forests. The views therefore take in more than just vineyards, encompassing several elements of the landscape. Brigadoon Wine Co welcomes guests to its tasting room, vineyard and winery. There, handcrafted small-batch wines are paired with a forest setting. Check winery visiting options before you travel.
Parks and Routes Through the Surrounding Area
Junction City has 14.6 acres of developed public parks maintained by the city. The parks add another dimension to a stay alongside the historic homes and museum exhibits. Numerous country roads around Junction City offer cyclists scenic landscapes. If cycling is one of your interests, these roads can therefore be a focus of your trip planning. The historical sites, August festival, wineries, parks and scenery appeal to different interests; choose the aspects that matter most for your stay in Junction City.
