Cottage Grove combines historic sites with clearly identified routes for different uses. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Cottage Grove, deciding what you’re most interested in can help with planning: architecture and mining history lead to different visits than biking and multi-use trails. The specific features of the places and routes provide a factual guide.

Historic Downtown and Mining History

Cottage Grove has a Downtown Historic District listed on the National Register. Main Street is also home to the commercial Historic District, which has the best-preserved collection of early 20th-century buildings in Lane County. Together, these historic references provide a concrete framework for exploring the city, from its designated downtown district to the architecture along Main Street.

Cottage Grove has six covered bridges. They are easy to visit and are less than 20 minutes from the historic city center. Chambers Railroad Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its history dates back to 1925, when lumber entrepreneur J.H. Chambers had it built so logs could be transported across the Coast Fork Willamette River to his sawmill on the east side of the bridge. This bridge is notable both for its historic listing and for its former role in transporting lumber.

The Bohemia Gold Mining Museum is located in the former Boots and Sandals Square Dance Barn, across from Bohemia Park. Exhibits include photographs, tools, ore samples, and other artifacts related to the region’s gold mining history. If you’re planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Bohemia Mining Days is a Cottage Grove tradition that celebrates the heritage of gold and silver mining. The festival includes live music, vendor booths, children’s activities, and historical demonstrations. Activities may change from year to year, so check the dates and program for your planned travel year.

Bike Trails and Getting Around

The Covered Bridges Scenic Bikeway starts at Trailhead Park, at the intersection of 10th Street and Main Street. It follows a paved, off-street path that is more than 15 miles long. Parking and restrooms for the bikeway are at Bohemia Park, across Main Street from Trailhead Park. As visitor amenities may change, check local information before you travel.

The Row River Trail also starts at Trailhead Park, near downtown Cottage Grove. It is 15.6 miles long and is a multi-use trail for cyclists, horseback riders, joggers, and walkers. A five-mile section runs along Dorena Lake. The two trails offer different points of reference: the Scenic Bikeway is characterized by its paved surface and off-street route, while the Row River Trail is distinguished by its multi-use access and lakeside section.
