Watauga: Mountain Views, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Watauga
The natural and cultural sites featured here offer different highlights. At Elk Knob State Park, a summit overlook offers panoramic views of North Carolina’s High Country. Elk Knob State Park also protects the mountain and the headwaters of the North Fork of the New River. The overlook and the headwater landscape are two distinct aspects of this natural area that shape the character of the park.
Mountain Landscapes and Hiking Trails
Julian Price Memorial Park stretches along the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Blowing Rock in Watauga County, from milepost 295.8 to 298.6.
There are different kinds of routes to consider for hikes. Moses Cone Park has 25 miles of gently ascending carriage roads, offering many options for leisurely walks. By contrast, the Green Knob Trail is a specific, 2.3-mile loop of moderate difficulty. It runs from Sim’s Creek through dense rhododendrons and stands of old-growth trees. The information about length and route type helps distinguish an extensive trail network from a single loop. Since trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before a hike.
The overlooks also offer different highlights. Howard Knob Park covers six acres and is located on Howard Knob Peak at an elevation of 4,396 feet above sea level. From its overlook, you can see downtown Boone, ASU and the surrounding mountain peaks. While the view at Elk Knob State Park looks out over the High Country, Howard Knob Park names specific destinations in Boone and the mountain landscape. This makes it possible to choose a view based on what you want to see.
The Blowing Rock offers a short, scenic walk with views of Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock and Hawksbill. The attraction is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., weather permitting. Check the weather and opening hours before your visit. In winter, Elk Knob State Park has about one mile of ungroomed terrain for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing; you will need to bring your own equipment. Snow and closures can affect conditions, so check current access in advance.
Gardens, History and Performances
The Daniel Boone Native Gardens feature native plants from the Appalachian region across three acres of informal landscaping. The Hickory Ridge History Museum displays a collection of historic log cabins. Mystery Hill’s 1903 Dougherty House Museum is a historic house dating to 1898 and offers a glimpse into 19th-century mountain life.
Flat Top Manor is home to the Parkway Craft Center; the property at Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is listed on the Register of Historic Places. The Original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis was added to the National Register of Historic Places in April 1973.
Tweetsie Railroad is a Wild West family theme park with a railroad heritage. Its locomotive is the last surviving narrow-gauge steam locomotive of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC). A three-mile steam-powered train ride travels through the scenic mountains of North Carolina; the park also offers gold panning, gem mining, live entertainment, rides and a petting zoo. The operating calendar is seasonal, and some activities may also be scheduled seasonally. Horn in the West offers a different highlight with an outdoor drama about Daniel Boone’s adventures in the High Country; performance dates are also seasonal.
The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum holds weekly art workshops for teens and adults. Since workshop dates can change, it is worth checking the current calendar before visiting. This helps distinguish cultural offerings such as workshops and outdoor drama from landscapes, collections and historic listings described as enduring features.
