Alleghany County offers two distinctly different natural highlights for a nature-focused trip: the New River and the granite dome in Stone Mountain State Park. New River State Park is located in Ashe and Alleghany counties; Stone Mountain State Park is located in Alleghany and Wilkes counties. Each park also extends into another county. Together, they offer a contrast between riverside scenery and paddling access on one hand, and a distinctive rock formation and historic homestead on the other. The choice is clear: would you like to focus on the river and its access points, or on the granite landscape at Stone Mountain?

Riverside Scenery Along the New River

New River State Park has seven access points along a river protected as a National Wild and Scenic River. The New River flows north through three states. The park is therefore more than a single spot along the river: it offers several access points along a river with an extensive course. If you include the park in your trip plans, it’s worth considering the specific access point, not just the park’s name.

The access requirements at Alleghany Access are especially clear: it can only be reached by paddle craft. Kings Creek Access is used for parking when visiting this access point. There are also hiking trails at Alleghany Access. These trails do not change the requirement to arrive by paddle craft. So, first plan to arrive by boat and use the designated parking area; the hiking trails are another feature of this location. This keeps access and parking in view as two separate planning considerations.

Granite, History, and Trails at Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain State Park is home to a 600-foot-high granite dome designated a National Natural Landmark. The name describes a distinctive, domed rock formation; its specific height and rock type give this natural attraction a clear identity. Visitors interested in geology and mountain landscapes will find a different focus here than at the New River, where the access points along the river shape the experience.

At the foot of Stone Mountain is Hutchinson Homestead, a restored farmstead dating to the mid-19th century. The mountain’s foothills offer a historical perspective alongside the rocky landscape. A section of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail runs through Stone Mountain State Park near the backcountry campsites. Together, these features give the park several distinct points of interest: a designated natural landmark, a historic homestead, and a specific section of the State Trail.

Which focus suits your trip?

Different details matter when planning: access by paddle craft is essential at Alleghany Access, while the granite dome, homestead history, and trail section define the experience at Stone Mountain. Use the experiences you want to plan first to guide your search.
