Discover Stanly County through its lakes, trails and cultural history. Lake Tillery lies on the eastern edge of the county; recreation, water sports and fishing take center stage at Badin Lake. There are also hiking trails, a blueway for canoeing and kayaking, and museums with exhibits on the region’s history. The focus that best suits your trip can also guide your hotel search.

Lakes, swimming areas and paddling

On the Stanly County side, Badin Lake is largely undeveloped. There are public beaches and swimming areas at the lake, which is also suited to water sports and fishing. This makes it easy to plan a day by the water and activities on the lake. Lake Tillery offers a different geographic landmark: it lies on the eastern edge of the county, and parts of Morrow Mountain State Park and Uwharrie National Forest border the lake.

Bald eagles are sighted at Lake Tillery, though whether you’ll actually spot one on a visit can vary. Those interested in waterways can enjoy extended canoe and kayak trips on calm, shallow water along the Rocky River Blueway. In Norwood, there is a canoe and kayak access point on the Rocky River at the border between Stanly and Anson counties. Along one section of the blueway, Piedmont bottomland forest shapes the habitat; more than 50 bird species are found there. The Rocky River itself ends where it meets the Yadkin Pee Dee at Fork Farms in Stanly County.

Trails for different abilities

The trails mentioned here also vary in length, difficulty and permitted use. The Morrow Mountain Trail is 2.6 miles long, moderately difficult and for hiking only. At 1.0 mile, the Three Rivers Nature Trail is shorter, rated easy and also for hiking only. This gives you a choice of two trails with very different lengths and difficulty levels.

The Long Loop Bridle Trail is 17.3 miles long and moderately difficult. It is intended for both horseback riding and hiking. Compared with the two trails reserved for hiking, it offers a different type of use and is the longest route mentioned here. In Albemarle, the Roger F. Snyder Greenway adds another option: this paved, nearly level trail is suitable for walking, running and cycling, with several access points for residents and pedestrians. These details can help you choose an activity that fits your planned day.

Cultural history in museums and townscapes

You can explore the area’s cultural history at several specific sites. The main gallery of the Stanly County Museum covers the county’s cultural history over a span of more than 10,000 years. The Oakboro Regional Museum of History features the exhibit “Ancient Life of the Rocky River: Early American Artifacts.” These themes offer different ways to explore the past: one takes a broad view across time, while the other focuses on early American artifacts from the Rocky River area.

The built heritage is also part of the area’s history. The Badin Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. In Oakboro, downtown has been revitalized through the renovation and restoration of buildings constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. The Oakboro Music Hall hosts bluegrass concerts featuring nationally known musicians. If you’d like to focus your stay on culture, these places bring together history, architecture and music, with each site offering something different.
